Three Matches Await Volleyball To Start 2014 Season

The Owls open the 2014 season this weekend with three matches.

AND SO IT BEGINS...
The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team will open the 2014 campaign by participating in the Dowling Tournament in Rockville, N.Y. this weekend. The Owls will start the tournament with matches against Nyack on Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. and Dowling at 7 p.m. The following day, the Owls will take on NYIT at 1 p.m.

LOOKING BACK AT LAST YEAR
The Owls posted their sixth consecutive winning season during the 2013 campaign and closed the year with 17 wins. SCSU also narrowly missed out on a bid to the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament.

IN THE NORTHEAST-10 PRESEASON POLL
The Owls were selected to finish 10th according to the Northeast-10 Conference coaches' poll.

ALL-TIME VERSUS NYACK
Nyack holds a 16-6 edge in the all-time series with the Owls.

ALL-TIME VERSUS DOWLING
Dowling leads the all-time series with the Owls by a 12-0 margin.

ALL-TIME VERSUS NYIT
NYIT has a 7-2 edge in the all-time series with the Owls.

EIGHT IS GREAT
The Owls have eight student-athletes returning from last year's team, including Morgan Carman, Taylor Carlson, Kelly Gunneson and Nicole Hauser, all of whom have seen time as starters in their careers.

OWLS WELCOME NINE NEWCOMERS
The Owls welcome 10 student-athletes to the team this year: Carly Balskus, Jasmin Barrett, Emily Carver, Alexandria Jurgens, Taylor Macdowell, Alexandra Nimz, Alisha Noble, Haley Samuelson, Sean Taylor and Briauna Tutwiler.

GUNNESON NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
Kelly Gunneson was named to the Northeast-10 Conference Volleyball All-Academic Team for her work in the classroom and on the court last fall. To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: participated in at least half of the team's competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; achieved a 3.3 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution.

MCVEY EARNS ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS
Senior Lauren McVey received year-end honors from the Northeast-10 Conference, as voted on by the league's coaches. McVey was named to the Third-Team for the second consecutive season.

ON DECK
The Owls are back in action on Sept. 8 for their home opener against Queens at Pelz Gym.
