Volleyball Splits Pair of Road Matches Against Nyack and Dowling College

ROCKVILLE, N.Y. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team split a double header tonight on the Molloy College campus in Rockville, N.Y. The Owls took the first match, 3-1, against Nyack, but dropped the second match, 3-1, against Dowling College. 

Sophomore Nicole Hauser (Stevens Point, Wisc.) led the Owls with a team-high 30 kills and 26 digs, while picking up two double-doubles on the night. Junior Taylor Carlson (Centennial, Colo.) finished the night with a combined 45 assists. Junior Kelly Gunneson (Cheshire, Conn.) chipped in with a total of 18 kills and 13 digs.

Game One: The first set was an offensive battle between the two teams. Nyack took control early in the frame, 7-4, before the Owls rallied back to tie it at eight. SCSU couldn't find a way to answer back and the Owls dropped the first set, 25-20.

Nyack led for the beginning of the second set, before SCSU went on a 6-0 run to take a commanding 10-3 lead. The Owls secured the set, 25-13, and tied the match at 1-1. 

After the second set, Nyack's energy level decreased and SCSU managed to capitalize on this edge. The Owls took a 15-10 lead over the Warriors and ended the third set, 25-18. In the final frame, Nyack succumbed to the Owls, 25-16.

Game Two: Dowling opened the match taking set one from the Owls, 25-13. However, SCSU battled in the second set taking an early 8-3 lead over the Golden Lions. With the score tied at 22, the Owls pulled away with the second set by two, 25-23.

With the match tied at 1-1, Dowling came together and secured the 3-1 victory over the Owls by winning the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-13.

The Owls return to action tomorrow (Sept. 6), when they take on NYIT in a non-conference showdown in Rockville, N.Y. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
