Women's Basketball Holds Off Saint Anselm, 67-60, Tuesday Evening

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomore guard Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) scored a team-high 16 points to lead the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a 67-60 home victory over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday night at Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improve to 10-7 overall and 7-2 in conference play.




Weselyj finished with 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field and 2-of-7 from long range. Freshman Chandler Williams (Chepachet, R.I.) came in off the bench with a career-high 12 points for the Owls. Junior Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) and senior Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) chipped in with nine points each, respectively.

It was a slow start for both teams as the Hawks scored the first basket of the game at the 15:22 mark after layup from Raquel Johnson. Following the Hawks' basket, the visitors' found themselves up 6-0, but a short run by the Owls tied the game at 6-all. Southern Connecticut took control of the game grabbing a 12-point lead (25-13), after a made layup from Weselyj with 5:08 left to play in the first.



However, Saint Anselm was able to tie the Owls at 31-all after an 18-6 run, but Weselyj came through for the Owls scoring off a deep three-pointer with five seconds left to put the Owls up 34-31 heading into halftime. Weselyj led the Owls at the half with 10 points while the Owls' offense went 13-of-32 (40.6 percent) from the floor.

Momentum picked up in the second as the Owls opened the half on a 3-0 run to take a five-point, 37-32, lead over the Hawks. Over the next six minutes of play, both teams battled back-and-forth forcing three ties until Southern Connecticut went on a 12-0 run to take a commanding 14-point lead with 9:14 left to play. 

For the remainder of the game, Southern Connecticut kept its lead to double-digits until a three-pointer from Caitlyn Abela put Saint Anselm within nine, 67-58, with 35 seconds left. But, it was Southern Connecticut who picked up the 67-60 NE-10 Conference victory over Saint Anselm Tueday night.

The Owls return to action on Saturday, Jan. 21 as they travel to Colchester, Vt. to take on Saint Michael's College in a Northeast-10 Conference clash. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
