Women's Basketball Set to Face No. 7/9 Stonehill College and Franklin Pierce University This Week

Owls prepare for two games this week, including a home game against Franklin Pierce on Saturday, Jan. 24.

NORTHEAST-10 PLAY CONTINUES
Despite a tough loss against Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon, the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team looks to bounce back as the team travels to Easton, Mass. to take on No. 7/9 Stonehill College Wednesday evening. Then, the Owls will return home one Saturday to challenge the Franklin Pierce University Ravens in a conference clash at Moore Field House.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST THE SKYHAWKS
Stonhill College holds a 12-11 edge in the all-time series against the Owls.

LAST SEASON AGAINST THE SKYHAWKS
Down three players due to injury, the Owls stepped up in its 79-77 victory over Stonehill on January 22, 2014. With eight minutes left to play, Southern went on a 13-3 run to make the score 61-52. The Skyhawks attempted to creep back in by scoring four three-pointers in the last minute and half, but the Owls ran away with the conference win.

ALL-TIME AGAINST THE RAVENS
Franklin Pierce leads the all-time series against the Owls, 32-15.

LAST SEASON AGAINST THE RAVENS
In the first meeting against Franklin Pierce on January 25, 2014, the Ravens defeated the Owls on the road, 76-68. After clinching a spot in the NE-10 tournament, the Owls re-matched the Ravens in the first round, but concluded their season with a 74-66 loss to the Ravens.

NORTHEAST-10 SOUTHWEST STANDINGS
Despite the loss to the Purple Knights on Saturday afternoon, the Owls remain at No. 3 in the Southwest Division standings. Adelphi and New Haven claim the No. 1 and No. 2 slots, respectively.

A QUICK LOOK BACK
Southern Conn. went 1-1 last week in Northeast-10 Conference action as the team defeated Saint Anselm College at home, 67-60, but earned its eighth loss of the season to Saint Michael's College, 74-73.

DOUBLE-FIGURES
Last week, the Owls had four players score in double-figures. Mariah Hankton led the way with 14.0 points while Maria Weselyj, Chandler Williams and Taylor McLaughlin chipped in with 10.0, respectively.

FRESHMAN SUCCESS
Last week against Saint Anselm, Chandler Williams had a career-night as the rookie recorded a career-high 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from long range.

DEFENSIVE LOCKDOWN
In the last three games, Danielle Powell has recorded at least three blocks per game while tying her career-high six blocks against Bentley on Jan. 10. She is currently leading the team in the blocking category with 39.

BEATHEA CLOSING IN ON 1,000
This season thus far, Jackie Beathea has scored a 259 points as well as totaled a combined 922 career points. As of 1/19, she is 78 points shy of her 1,000 career point.

AMONG NCAA LEADERS
As of 1/15, Nicole Grossbard, Jackie Beathea and Danielle Powell are ranked among the Div. II leaders. Grossbard ranks 28th averaging 4.9 assists per game while Beathea leads the NCAA in offensive rebounds per game (6.0), is seventh in double-doubles (11) and ninth in rebounds per game (12.3). Powell is ranked 29th averaging 2.12 blocks per game.

ITS ALL ABOUT REBOUNDING
As of 1/15, the Owls are ranked among the top 50 nationally Div. II programs in three statistical categories. The Owls are No. 15 in offensive rebounds per game (17.0), No. 47 in blocks per game (4.0) and No. 48 in defensive rebounds per game (29.0).

BEATHEA AMONG SCSU CAREER LEADERS
Jackie Beathea is sixth in the all-time career rebounding category with 663 rebounds and tied the single-game high of 19 rebounds on 11/19/14 at Adelphi. 

BENCH SUCCESS
Southern Conn. has benefitted from increased scoring output from nearly its entire roster this season. The team has totaled 1240 points this season while 404 of those points come from off the bench. 

CONFERENCE HONORS
Jackie Beathea (seven times), Taylor McLaughlin (three times), Danielle Powell (four times) and Mariah Hankton (twice) have all been named to the Northeast-10 Conference Honor Roll this season thus far.

NEW ARRIVALS
The Owls welcome six newcomers to the squad for the 2014-15 season - Kendra Meredith, Chloe Brinton, Paige Decker, Abby Hurlbert, Liz McKinley and Chandler Williams.

WELCOME BACK
Southern Connecticut returns nine players from last year's squad – seniors Mariah Hankton and Sydney Lester, juniors Danielle Powell, Nicole Grossbard, Jackie Beathea and Jaqueline Deens, sophomores Maria Weselyj and Taylor McLaughlinand redshirt freshman Murphy Murad.

DESALVO NOTE
Bert DeSalvo is in his first full season as head coach for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team. Entering the season, DeSalvo had compiled a 99-26 (.792) overall record as a head coach.

IN THE POLLS
Southern Connecticut was selected seventh in the Southwest Division according to the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Senior Mariah Hankton and junior Nicole Grossbard will serve as team captains for the Owls this winter.

LOOKING BACK ON THE SEASON THAT WAS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team closed the regular season with 12 wins and qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Owls had three student-athletes recognized by the league with year-end honors.

TWO NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS
Jackie Beathea was selected Third Team All-Conference and freshman standout Taylor McLaughlin was named to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team last year.

AMONG THE NE-10 LEADERS
Amongst the returners, the Owls had two players finish in the top 10 of Northeast-10 Conference participants in three categories.
Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in rebounds per game, pulling down 10.1 per contest.
Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in offensive rebounds per game, pulling 4.8 per contest.
• Sydney Lester finished No. 5 in steals, tallying 2.1 per contest.

EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had nine student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2013-14 academic year.

ON DECK
Southern Conn. returns to action on January 27 as the team welcomes Merrimack College to Moore Field House for a NE-10 clash. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
