Women's Basketball Set to Take on Assumption and Merrimack

Women's hoops are back in action with two crucial NE-10 Conference games against the Greyhounds and Warriors.
NORTHEAST-10 PLAY RESUMES AFTER SNOW
After a week off due to snow, the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team resumes Northeast-10 Conference play with two games against Assumption and Merrimack College. The Owls will take on Assumption College Saturday afternoon in Worcester, Mass. before welcoming Merrimack College Monday evening at Moore Field House.

MAKE-UP DAY
The Owls were scheduled to take on Merrimack College on Thursday evening at Moore Field House, but due to recent snowfall the Owls will play the Warriors Monday evening at 5:30 p.m.

ALL-TIME AGAINST THE GREYHOUNDS
Southern Conn. holds an 18-16 edge in the all-time series against the Greyhounds.

LAST SEASON AGAINST THE GREYHOUNDS
Back on Feb. 1, 2014, the Southern Conn. women's basketball team defeated Assumption College, 59-50. Taylor McLaughlin led all scoring with 19 points and 10 rebounds. SCSU ended the afternoon 33.8% from the field and 65% from the free-throw line.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST THE WARRIORS
Southern Conn. leads the all-time series against the Warriors, 13-6.

LAST SEASON AGAINST THE WARRIORS
Jackie Beathea and Keshia Primo both scored over 20 points apiece as the women's basketball team defeated Merrimack, 72-62, in North Andover, Mass on January 28, 2014.

NE-10 SOUTHWEST STANDINGS
After posting a 1-1 week, the Owls remain third in the Southwest Division as well as tied with Le Moyne College. Adelphi and New Haven claim the No. 1 and No. 2 slots, respectively.

A QUICK LOOK BACK
Southern Conn. went 1-1 last week in Northeast-10 Conference action as the team fell to No. 5/7 Stonehill in overtime, 82-74, but bounced back to defeat Franklin Pierce at home, 71-63.

THE LAST TIME AGAINST FRANKLIN PIERCE
With the win against Franklin Pierce, the Owls earned their first victory against the Ravens since Jan. 3, 2012. The Owls had four players score at least 10 points in the 81-74 road victory.

DOUBLE-FIGURES
Last week, the Owls had three players score in double-figures. Mariah Hankton led the way with 19.0 points while Taylor McLaughlin and Maria Weselyj recorded 12.5 points and 10.0 points per contest.

HANKTON LEADING THE WAY
In the last three games for the Owls, Mariah Hankton led the Owls in scoring. Last week, Hankton averaged 19.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest as well as recorded a steal and three assists.

DEFENSIVE LOCKDOWN
In the last five games, Danielle Powell has recorded 3.8 blocks per game while tying her career-high six blocks against Bentley on Jan. 10. She is currently leading the team in the blocking category with 45.

AMONG NCAA LEADERS
As of 1/25, Nicole Grossbard, Jackie Beathea and Danielle Powell are ranked among the Div. II leaders. Grossbard ranks 26th averaging 5.0 assists per game while Beathea ranks second in offensive rebounds per game (6.0), is 16th in double-doubles (12) and 14th in rebounds per game (12.1). Powell is ranked 25th averaging 2.25 blocks per game.

OFFENSIVELY AND DEFENSIVELY
As of 1/25, the Owls are ranked among the top 50 nationally Div. II programs in two statistical categories. The Owls are No. 16 in offensive rebounds per game (17.0) and No. 47 in blocked shots per game (4.1).

BEATHEA AMONG SCSU CAREER LEADERS
Jackie Beathea is fourth in the all-time career rebounding category with 734 rebounds and tied the single-game high of 19 rebounds on 11/19/14 at Adelphi. 

BENCH SUCCESS
Southern Conn. has benefitted from increased scoring output from nearly its entire roster this season. The team has totaled 1385 points this season while 460 of those points come from off the bench. 

CONFERENCE HONORS
Jackie Beathea (seven times), Taylor McLaughlin (four times), Danielle Powell (four times) and Mariah Hankton (four times) have all been named to the Northeast-10 Conference Honor Roll this Honor Roll this season thus far.

NEW ARRIVALS
The Owls welcome six newcomers to the squad for the 2014-15 season - Kendra Meredith, Chloe Brinton, Paige Decker, Abby Hurlbert, Liz McKinley and Chandler Williams.

WELCOME BACK
Southern Connecticut returns nine players from last year's squad – seniors Mariah Hankton and Sydney Lester, juniors Danielle Powell, Nicole Grossbard, Jackie Beathea and Jaqueline Deens, sophomores Maria Weselyj and Taylor McLaughlinand redshirt freshman Murphy Murad.

DESALVO NOTE
Bert DeSalvo is in his first full season as head coach for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team. Entering the season, DeSalvo had compiled a 99-26 (.792) overall record as a head coach.

IN THE POLLS
Southern Connecticut was selected seventh in the Southwest Division according to the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Senior Mariah Hankton and junior Nicole Grossbard will serve as team captains for the Owls this winter.

LOOKING BACK ON THE SEASON THAT WAS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team closed the regular season with 12 wins and qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Owls had three student-athletes recognized by the league with year-end honors.

TWO NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS
Jackie Beathea was selected Third Team All-Conference and freshman standout Taylor McLaughlin was named to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team last year.

AMONG THE NE-10 LEADERS
Amongst the returners, the Owls had two players finish in the top 10 of Northeast-10 Conference participants in three categories.
Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in rebounds per game, pulling down 10.1 per contest.
Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in offensive rebounds per game, pulling 4.8 per contest.
• Sydney Lester finished No. 5 in steals, tallying 2.1 per contest.

EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had nine student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2013-14 academic year.

ON DECK
Southern Conn. returns to action on Feb. 4th as the Owls welcome cross-town rival the Univ. of New Haven to Moore Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
