Women's Basketball Visits SNHU and Hosts Bentley In Week Ahead

NORTHEAST-10 PLAY RESUMES
Looking to snap a three-game losing streak, the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team travels to Manchester, N.H. to face Southern New Hampshire University in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown Wednesday evening on NESNplus. The Owls will then return home on Saturday, Jan. 10 to host the reigning National Champions, the Bentley University Falcons, in a Northeast-10 Conference clash.

LAST SEASON AGAINST THE PENMEN
On January 8, 2014, the Owls defeated  Southern New Hampshire University, 75-62. Jackie Beathea led the Owls with a double-double performance, 17 points and 10 rebounds.

LAST SEASON AGAINST THE FALCONS
On January 11, 2014, the women's basketball team fell to nationally ranked No. 1 Bentley University in a Northeast-10 Conference battle, 83-66. Mariah Hankton led all Owls with 16 points.

WEDNESDAY'S GAME AT SNHU TELEVISED
Fans who are unable to make it to Manchester, N.H. for Wednesday's women's basketball match-up at Southern New Hampshire, the game will be televised live on NESNplus.

NORTHEAST-10 SOUTHWEST STANDINGS
Following Saturday's loss to cross-town rival New Haven, the Owls dropped to No. 3 in the Southwest Division standings. Adelphi and New Haven claim the No. 1 and No. 2 spot, respectively.

A QUICK LOOK BACK
 Southern Connecticut went 0-3 last week dropping to 7-7 overall and 4-3 in NE-10 Conference action. On Wednesday afternoon, the Owls snapped a six-game winning streak falling to Saint Thomas Aquinas, 63-61. The Owls opened up the new year with back-to-back losses to the Univ. of New Haven, 79-76, and the Univ. of Sciences (Pa.), 78-61.

DOUBLE-DIGITS ALL AROUND
Four members of the women's basketball team reached double-digits last week. Jackie Beathea averaged a team-high 16.0 points and 13.7 rebounds, while Mariah Hankton netted 11.0 points and tallied seven assists. Taylor McLaughlin and Sydni Lester each chipped in with 10.3 points and 10.0 points per game, respectively.

CAREER DAY FOR BEATHEA
Jackie Beathea recorded a career-high 28 points and pulled down 14 rebounds at St. Thomas Aquinas on Dec. 31.

BEATHEA NAMED CT ARMY NATIONAL GUARD/ SCSU FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Jackie Beathea averaged 16.0 points and 13.7 rebounds per game in the Owls' three contests last week. She opened the week with a career-high 28 points and pulled down 14 rebounds at St. Thomas Aquinas. Beathea then added nine points and 16 rebounds against New Haven before closing the week with 11 points and 11 rebounds against University of the Sciences. Beathea now has 10 double-doubles on the year. She leads the Northeast-10 Conference in rebounds per game (12.2) this year.

AMONG NCAA LEADERS
As of 1/01, Nicole Grossbard and Jackie Beathea are ranked among the Div. II leaders. Grossbard ranks 10th averaging 5.8 assists per game while Beathea leads the NCAA in offensive rebounds per game (6.0), is third in double-doubles (8) and 13th in rebounds per game (16.2).

ITS ALL ABOUT REBOUNDING
As of 1/01, the Owls are ranked among the top 50 nationally Div. II programs in two statistical categories. The Owls are No. 47 in rebound margin (+6.6) and No. 16 in offensive rebounds per game (17.0).

BEATHEA AMONG SCSU CAREER LEADERS
Jackie Beathea is now tied in fifth in the all-time career rebounding category with 650 rebounds and tied the single-game high of 19 rebounds on 11/19/14 at Adelphi. She also has a total of 874 career points and is 12 points away from scoring her 1,000th career point.

BENCH SUCCESS
Southern Conn. has benefitted from increased scoring output from nearly its entire roster this season. The team has totaled 972 points this season while 308 of those points come from off the bench.

NE-10 WEEKLY HONOR
After her performance last week, Jackie Beathea was selected to the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll. This is her sixth time this season to be named on the honor roll.

CONFERENCE HONORS
Taylor McLaughlin (three times), Danielle Powell (three times) and Mariah Hankton (twice) have all been named to the Northeast-10 Conference Honor Roll this season thus far.

NEW ARRIVALS
The Owls welcome six newcomers to the squad for the 2014-15 season - Kendra Meredith, Chloe Brinton, Paige Decker, Abby Hurlbert, Liz McKinley and Chandler Williams.

WELCOME BACK
Southern Connecticut returns nine players from last year's squad – seniors Mariah Hankton and Sydney Lester, juniors Danielle Powell, Nicole Grossbard, Jackie Beathea and Jaqueline Deens, sophomores Maria Weselyj and Taylor McLaughlinand redshirt freshman Murphy Murad.

DESALVO NOTE
Bert DeSalvo is in his first full season as head coach for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team. Entering the season, DeSalvo had compiled a 99-26 (.792) overall record as a head coach.

IN THE POLLS
Southern Connecticut was selected seventh in the Southwest Division according to the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Senior Mariah Hankton and junior Nicole Grossbard will serve as team captains for the Owls this winter.

LOOKING BACK ON THE SEASON THAT WAS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team closed the regular season with 12 wins and qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Owls had three student-athletes recognized by the league with year-end honors.

TWO NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS
Jackie Beathea was selected Third Team All-Conference and freshman standout Taylor McLaughlin was named to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team last year.

AMONG THE NE-10 LEADERS
Amongst the returners, the Owls had two players finish in the top 10 of Northeast-10 Conference participants in three categories.
Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in rebounds per game, pulling down 10.1 per contest.
Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in offensive rebounds per game, pulling 4.8 per contest.
• Sydney Lester finished No. 5 in steals, tallying 2.1 per contest.

EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had nine student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2013-14 academic year.

ON DECK
The Owls return to action on January 13 as the team challenges Saint Anselm College at Moore Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
