Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.), as the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak defeating Southern New Hampshire University, 63-52, Wednesday night at SNHU Fieldhouse.
With the win, the Owls improve to 8-7 overall and 5-2 in Northeast-10 play while the Penmen end their five-game winning streak falling to 8-7 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
Beathea recorded her 11th double-double tonight as she tallied 19 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Junior
Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) chipped in with 14 points, four rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block. Senior
Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) rounded out the trio of double-digit scorers with 12 points, two assists and six rebounds.
Southern Conn. opened the first half with a 14-4 run until a layup from the Penmen sparked a 9-4 run to bring the score to within three, 18-15, entering the games first timeout.
Southern N.H. was able to bring the score two within two, 21-19, after a layup from Brooke Springfield. Shortly after, the Owls went on a 4-0 run bringing the score to 25-19 with 5:47 remaining in the first.
However, a short spurt from the Penmen brought the deficit to two, 25-23, but a jumper from
Sydni Lester (Teaneck, N.J.) put the Owls up by four, 27-23. In the final two minutes of the first, Beathea closed the half for the Owls, 31-23, after back-to-back layups.
Beathea led the Owls' scoring with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. For the half, Southern Conn. shot 41.2 percent (14-of-34) from the field while holding the Penmen to 34.4 percent (11-of-32) from the floor.
Southern Conn. continued to dominate on offense, opening the half with a 12-6 run, taking a 14-point lead over the Penmen seven minutes in. Southern N.H. was able to rattle off four straight points to cut the lead to 10, 43-33, with 12:13 left to play.
With less than seven minutes to play, Southern Conn found themselves up 17, 55-48, following a made jumper from Hankton. Over the next six minutes, the Penmen battled back to within nine, 61-52, but two free-throws from Lester secured the 63-52 win over Southern N.H.
Next up, the Owls return home on Saturday, Jan. 10 to welcome Bentley University in a Northeast-10 Conference clash. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. from Moore Field House.
