Box Score ALBANY, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team defeated Saint Rose 1-0 on Friday afternoon thanks to a goal by
Sean Black (London, England).
With the win, the Owls improve to 7-4-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the NE-10, while the Golden Knights fall to 5-6-1 and 4-4-1.
Black headed in his second goal of the year in the eighth minute off a corner kick from
Christian Samaniego (Toronto, Ontario).
Southern Connecticut had nine shots on the day, three of them on goal. Conversely,Saint Rose took 16 shots, only four of them on goal.
The Owls had an opportunity to put another goal on the board in the 57
th and 58
th minutes as
Chae Brangman (St. George's, Bermuda) took a shot that hit the crossbar. The ball came out to
Louis Greenway Tambini (Nottingham, England) who took a shot himself, but it was over the crossbar.
Saint Rose had two good chances to score in the 64
th minute on shots by Nathan Brown and Ryan Rooney, but they were both blocked before they reached
Noah Varonier (Miller Place, N.Y.) in net.
Varonier made a big save in the 89
th minute as Rooney was looking for the game-tying goal. He spun in the box and fired a shot but Varonier turned him away. It was one of four saves the sophomore made on the day.
The Owls return to action Wednesday when they host Adelphi at 7 p.m.
