Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. –
Victoria Conde (Madrid, Spain) scored both goals in Southern Connecticut State University's 2-1 win over Merrimack, including the game winning goal in the 88
th minute.
With the win, the Owls improve to 5-7 overall and 5-5 in the NE-10, while the Warriors fall to 8-3-3 and 5-3-2 NE-10. It is also the first home win for the Owls in their fifth home game.
The game was scoreless going into the half, but Tori Daigle got Merrimack on the board first in the 49
th minute. She took a pass from Jenna Savi in the middle of the box and aimed to score but she was defended by
Becca Scalise (West Hartford, Conn.). Daigle was forced to take a sliding shot just past
Erica Ridella (Warwick, N.Y.) in net for the Owls, which she connected on. Ridella made three saves for Southern Connecticut.
Three minutes after Daigle scored, Conde put the Owls on the board after she was set up by
Kieran DeBiase (Prospect, Conn.). Southern Connecticut hit the counter attack just outside of their defending third. Conde got the ball past midfield and passed it to DeBiase along the left wing, who brought it in toward the side of the box and gave it back to Conde, who was waiting in the middle of the box. She one-timed her third goal of the year past Molly Meehan to tie the game at one.
Then, with two minutes left, the Owls drew up the same play. DeBiase brought the ball into the box on the left side of the field and gave it up to Conde who one-timed the game winning goal in between Meehan and Megan Gada.
As of Saturday afternoon, Southern Connecticut is ninth in the NE-10 with four games remaining. The top eight teams in the conference make the postseason tournament.
After two wins this week, the Owls return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Stonehill.
