Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connceticut State University men's soccer team lost to the Adelphi Panthers on Friday evening by a final score of 1-0.
With the loss, the Owls drop to 7-5-1 and 6-3-1 in the NE-10, while the Panthers improve to 8-3-3 and 6-2-2.
The loss also vaults the Panthers in front of SCSU in the conference standings. Adelphi is now third
in the conference with 20 points while Southern Connecticut is fifth with 19.
Adelphi scored first in the 22nd minute after a goal kick by
Noah Varonier (Miller Place, N.Y.). His kick came out to midfield where it was touched by Caelan Hueber right to Federico De Oliveira. De Oliveira started his run with the ball roughly 50 yards away from the net. He sped right in between three Owl defenders on his way to Varonier, who had come out of the net and met De Oliveira at the top of the box. The Adelphi midfielder chipped the ball right past the sophomore keeper for the Owls for his fourth goal of the year.
Ignacio Navarro (Norwalk, Conn.) had an oppotunity to score in the 68th minute. He was delivered a perfect through ball into the box that Navarro shot but Sergio Reyes saved it right back to him. The defense collapsed on Navarro before he had a second chance to score.
The Owls got another great chance in the 80th minute when
Christian Samaniego ( Toronto, Ontario) crossed the ball in toward the net.
Louis Greenway Tambini (Nottingham, England) got his head on the ball and sent it in towards the net, but Reyes was there for the save again. The ball sat a few feet away from the goal line as
Sabri Akter (Unionville, Conn.) got tangled up with Reyes, but the defense was able to clear the ball before another Owl could get to it.
Adelphi outshot Southern Connecticut 14-6 on the night but just six to four in shots on goal.
The Owls return to action this weekend when they host Assumption on Saturday at 6 p.m.
