GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Despite a team-high 20-point effort from junior
Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) and a double-double from senior
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.), the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team came up short against Northeast-10 foe Adelphi University, 69-68, on Wednesday evening at the Center for Recreation and Sports.
Following the tough loss, the Owls are now 2-1 on the season and earned their first Northeast-10 Conference loss, 0-1. The Panthers are now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the NE-10.
Along with her 20 points, McLaughlin also recorded five rebounds, two blocks and two steals for the Owls. Senior
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) registered her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds as well as chipped in with a block and a steal.
Southern Connecticut came out strong to start off the first quarter as Beathea put the Owls on the board just 20 seconds in off a Panthers' foul that sent her to the line. Following the two made free throws, the Owls extended their lead to six, 6-0, before finding themselves up 11-5 with 6:01 left to play in the quarter.
The Owls maintained their lead over the hosts until a three-pointer from Haley Parks gave Adelphi its first lead of the game, 17-16. Over the final two minutes, the score was tied at 19-19, but Adelphi took the 21-19 lead to close out the quarter.
Similar to the first, Southern Connecticut came out fighting and opened the second quarter with an 11-2 run, 30-23, forcing Adelphi to call a timeout with 5:45 left in the frame. Over the next two minutes, no baskets were made until the 3:29 mark as Adelphi finally put a point on the board. Nevertheless, the Owls found themselves ahead 34-26 heading into halftime.
The third quarter was a different story as the Panthers opened the quarter with a 12-3 run to put the hosts ahead 40-37. However, a 5-3 run by the Owls brought the score to within one, 43-42, but over the final two minutes both teams found themselves tied at 48-48 heading into the final frame.
With a minute to go in regulation, Adelphi was able to hold a one-point lead over the Owls, 66-65, heading into a brief timeout. After the short break, Southern Connecticut controlled the ball and
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) was sent to the line where she made both baskets to put the visitors up 67-66.
Southern Connecticut called a timeout to get its defense set, but Adelphi answered right back with two, 69-67. With one second left on the clock, McLaughlin was able to send the game into overtime after being fouled by Adelphi, but she missed the first and made the second.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 21 as the team travels to Waterbury, Conn. for a non-conference battle with Post University. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. from the Drubner Center.
