Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) helped lead the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a 70-53 victory against in-state foe Post University as she recorded her second double-double of the season, set a new career-high in rebounds (22) as well as set a new SCSU single game-high in rebounds (22) on Saturday afternoon at the Drubner Center.
Following the win, the Owls move to 3-1 on the season while the Eagles fall to 0-5.
Beathea recorded a team-high 21 points, 22 rebounds, four steals, an assist and a block against the Eagles. Before today, the single game-high in rebounds was 20 and was recorded last by former Owl Tammy Kiernan in 1994 against Quinnipiac.
Along with Beathea, senior
Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) and junior
Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) also scored in double-digits for the Owls. Powell registered 13 points, three rebounds and a steal while McLaughlin chipped in with 11 points, three rebounds, and three steals. Redshirt sophomore
Murphy Murad (Storrs, Conn.) registered a team-high four assists.
Southern Connecticut came out to fight as the Owls opened the game with a 6-0 run before pushing their lead to seven, 11-4, after a layup from Beathea. The Eagles answered right back and brought the score to within five, 11-6, but the Owls ended the first quarter on a 9-4 run to keep them ahead 20-10.
The Owls continued to rack up the points as a free-throw from Maria Weseylj (Marlborough, Conn.) gave the Owls a 14-point lead, 24-10, just two minutes into the second. Post slowly chipped away at the visitors' lead, but Southern Connecticut found themselves ahead by 21, 37-16, with 2:51 to go in the quarter. Despite a 4-1 run by Post, Southern Connecticut remained ahead 38-20 heading into halftime.
Midway through the third quarter, Southern Connecticut grabbed its biggest lead of the day, 22-points, over Post, 49-27, and kept the double-digit lead, 57-41, to close out the third frame.
In the final quarter, Southern Connecticut did not back down on offense as the Owls led for no more than 14 points and secured the 70-53 victory over the Eagles.
The Owls are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 24 as the team welcomes AIC to Moore Field House for a Northeast-10 Conference showdown beginning at 5:30 p.m.
