NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Despite being down one-point at halftime, the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team could not stop American International's second half run as the Owls fell 67-51 on Tuesday evening at Moore Field House. Following the loss, the Owls drop to 3-2 on the season and remain winless, 0-2, in the Northeast-10 Conference.

Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) led the Owls this evening with her third double-double of the year with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Junior
Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) also scored in double-figures for the Owls with 10 points while senior
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) tallied a team-high five assists, five points, two rebounds and two steals.
The first quarter saw a lot of back-and-fourth action between Southern Connecticut and American International as both managed six ties and only two lead changes. The Owls took their first lead of the game at the 3:37 mark off a good layup from Beathea, but the Yellow Jackets were able to tie the game at 10-all. Following two made free throws from Beathea, Southern Connecticut found themselves up two, 12-10, but the visitors went up three, 15-12, to close out the first quarter.
Despite outshooting American International 12-10 in the second, the Yellow Jackets led for the majority of the quarter. Southern Connecticut tied the visitors for the seventh time, 22-22, before regaining the lead, 24-23, following a jumper from
Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) with 1:39 remaining. However, the Yellow Jackets score two more to take a 25-24 lead heading into halftime.
Coming out of the locker room, American International took control and maintained the lead for the remainder of the game. With 6:29 left in the third,
Abby Hurlbert (Thomaston, Conn.) brought the Owls to within three, 34-31, after scoring five straight points for the Owls. Not long after, the visitors extended its lead to double-digits and led by seven, 49-42, heading into the final quarter.
The Owls started off the quarter cutting American International's lead to seven, 51-44, but a 6-2 run by the Yellow Jackets pushed them ahead 57-46 with 6:40 left in regulation. With the clock winding down, Southern Connecticut chipped away at the double-digit lead, but fell 67-51 to the Yellow Jackets.
The Owls are back in action on Sunday, Nov. 30 as they host St. Edward's University. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. from Moore Field House.
