Box Score WALTHAM, Mass. - In a wild first round game in the NE-10 Tournament, Southern Connecticut State University lost to Bentley 3-2 after allowing three straight goals.
Bentley played downhill in the first half and got the majority of the chances, outshooting the Owls six to two overall and four to one in shots on goal.
It wasn't until the 53rd minute when
Mitchel White (Leicestershire, England) sent a long pass through the air towards the goal.
Chae Brangman (St. George's, Bermuda) ran under the ball as it bounced at the top of the box and chipped it above Jack Blatchford's head to put Southern ahead 1-0. Bentley would respond quickly.
The Falcons tied the game in the 67th minute on a goal by Nick Hoffman. Hoffman received the ball from a cross into the box and scored from eight yards out.
Less than two minutes later, Hoffman scored again. Sean Sullivan had the ball in the box when he passed it backward to Hoffman who shot to the near post past
Noah Varonier (Miller Place, N.Y.).
The Falcons extended their lead in the 76th minute on a goal by Scott Levy as Bentley moved the ball nicely in the box and Levy scored easily past Varonier.
Southern was able to get one back just under three minutes later.
Josh Abromaitis (Southbury, Conn.) received a pass from Brangman in the middle of the box and turned and shot to the near post past Blatchford to make the score 3-2 and give the Owls a chance.
However, SCSU could not manage a shot on goal in the final ten minutes of the game.
Varonier saved all four shots he faced in the first half, including coming out of the net in the 25th minute to take the ball away from Hoffman who was on a breakaway.
Varonier also cleaned up a Falcon scoring chance on a corner kick in the 33rd minute after Luc Batawi's header hit the near post.
The Owls had a near chance in the 39th minute from a header by White off a corner kick. The bouncing header was dangerous with a crowd in front of the net but Jack Blatchford was able to make the save for Bentley.
