Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 7 Southern Connecticut State University Owls defeated LIU Post Monday evening by a final score of 98-84.
Desmond Williams (Torrington, Conn.) nearly missed a triple-double with 28 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. It was his fourth double-double in five games. Freshman
Toby Christensen (Gentotfe, Denmark) scored a career high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from three and
Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) added 19 points and eight rebounds.
With the win, the Owls improve to 5-0 on the season, while LIU Post falls to 4-2.
LIU Post got to within eight points with over 11 minutes remaining, but a 21-8 Owl run led by Christensen shot the lead back up to 23, Southern's biggest of the game. The freshman forward hit two three pointers during the run to cement the double digit lead for
Scott Burrell's team. Freshman
Isaiah McLeod also contributed to the run with a three pointer, a steal, and an assist on Christensen's second three. McLeod finished the game with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting and 3-of-4 from deep. He is the third leading scorer on the team and averages only 19 minutes a game.
Southern Connecticut went into the half with a 56-44 lead.
Desmond Williams had 16 points and nine assists in the first frame alone. The nine assists were a career high, breaking his previous high of seven set in the last game against AIC. All in all, he would account for 52 points on the night.Â
The score was tied at 17 midway through the first half when the Owls went on a 23-11 run. Des Williams filled up the stat sheet over that quick five minute span with two field goals, six assists and three rebounds. The Owls would continue to extend the lead with Christensen making two more threes and Williams putting up two more field goals and assists, each.
Southern Connecticut returns to action on Wednesday night when it travels to West Haven to take on the New Haven Chargers at 7:30 p.m.
