Women's Hoops Defeats Concordia (N.Y.) in Non-Conference Showdown

Senior Danielle Powell finished the evening with 13 points, eight rebounds, an assist, two blocks and a steal against the Clippers.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Following two double-digit performances by senior Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) and junior Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.), the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball went on to defeat non-conference foe Concordia (N.Y.) College on Thursday evening by the score of 69-53. Following tonight's win, the Owls improve to 6-3 on the season and the Clippers fall to 1-6 overall.

Powell and McLaughlin led the team in points with 13 a piece, while Powell chipped in with eight rebounds, an assist, two blocks and a steal over 37 minutes of play. McLaughlin recorded three rebounds and an assist for the Owls. Senior Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) registered a team-high 17 rebounds as well as registered eight points, an assist, a block and two steals. Both senior Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) and sophomore Murphy Murad (Storrs, Conn.) posted five assists each.

The first quarter was a slow go for the Owls as the team shot only 19 percent from the field, but managed to force seven Clippers' turnovers and score five points off second chance shots. Over the first five minutes of play, we saw Southern Connecticut and Concordia battle through three ties and one lead change. With the score tied at 10-10, sophomore Paige Decker (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) made three straight points off free throws to put the Owls up 13-10 at the end of the first.

The second quarter was more upbeat as the Owls outscored the Clippers 19-13 and held a nine-point lead heading into halftime. Powell scored the Owls' first basket of the quarter until a jumper from Jessica Rosalbo tied the game at 15-15. Southern Connecticut rallied back with 8-0 run to put them a head by eight, 23-15, with 5:11 to go in the frame. At the 3:48 mark, Jessica Rosalbo hit a deep three to bring the score to within five, 23-18, but another short run by the hosts extended the score to double-digits, 32-18. However, Concordia ended the quarter with five straight points to bring the score to within nine, 32-23.

Concordia came out of the locker room with vengeance as the Clippers began the quarter with a 7-0 run to cut the Owls' lead to two, 32-30. But, the hosts brought their lead back up to double-digits, 43-33, after a 11-3 run sparked by by Powell at the 6:38 mark. With 3:40 to go in the frame, Southern Connecticut's offense found its rhythm and secured a 20-point lead, 53-33, heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.

In the final quarter, Concordia could only play catch-up as the Owls maintained their double-digit lead for the rest of the game. Concordia managed to cut the score to within 11 at two different occassions, but the Owls secured the 69-53 non-conference victory.



The Owls are back in action on Saturday, Dec. 12 as the team continues their six game home stand and welcome Pace University to Moore Field House for a 1:30 p.m. tip-off.
