Women’s Basketball Extends Winning Streak to Three, Defeats Pace 82-48

Senior Jackie Beathea recorded her fifth double-double to help the Owls defeat the Setters.

NEW HAVEN, Conn – Ten different Owls scored for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team in its 82-48 victory over Northeast-10 Conference foe Pace University at Moore Field House on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Owls extend their winning streak to three games and improve to 7-3 on the season and 2-3 in the conference. Also, this was the first win by 30 or more points since December 30, 2011 against Dominican College.



Senior forward Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds while chipping in with two assists and a steal. Senior guard Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) matched her career-high nine assists as well as tallied two rebounds, 10 points and three steals. Senior forward Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) rounded out the trio of double-digit scorers with 15 points to go along with four rebounds and two assists.

Southern Connecticut came out strong to start off the first quarter of the Owls opened the game with a 6-0 run, sparked by a layup from Powell. Shortly after, Pace battled back to within two, 6-4, off a jumper from Gabriella Rubin, but a 10-0 run by the hosts extended their lead to 12, 16-4, with 1:16 remaining in the quarter. Both teams traded three-point baskets within the final minute as the Owls led 19-7 at the end of the first.

Up 11 to start off the second, Southern Connecticut remained in control of their offense as a layup from Powell game the Owls their biggest lead of the game with 17, 33-16, with 3:22 remaining in the frame. Pace rallied to within 13, 34-21, but Southern Connecticut ended the quarter with a 2-0 run to take a 36-21 lead heading into halftime.

Following the two quarters, Southern Connecticut held the Setters to only 6-of-16 shooting from the field as well as forced 15 Pace turnovers and tallied 15 points off those caused turnovers. Powell led the Owls at the half with 13 points while Beathea was just two rebounds and a point shy of recording a double-double, nine points and eight rebounds.

From the start of the third quarter, Pace could only play catch-up as the Owls extended their lead to 23, 51-28, after a jumper from Powell at the 3:21 mark. Pace found themselves within 18, 53-35, but Southern Connecticut held a 58-37 lead heading into the final quarter.

Pace continued to chip away at the Owls' double-digit lead as a layup from Gabriella Rubin cut the lead to 19, 60. However the Owls ended the final quarter with a 22-7 run to take the 82-48 home court victory.



The Owls are back in action next Thursday, Dec. 17 as the team hosts Caldwell College. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Moore Field House.
