Women's Basketball Challenges Caldwell and St. Thomas Aquinas This Week

The Owls host two non-conference games this week against the Cougars and Spartans.

OWLS CONTINUE SIX GAME HOME STAND
After posting a 2-0 record last week, the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball looks to continue its winning ways as the Owls take on non-conference opponents Caldwell University on Thursday evening and Saint Thomas Aquinas on Sunday afternoon.

SCOUTING CALDWELL
• The Cougars enter Thursdays game with a record of 6-4 while also recording a conference mark of 4-1 in the CACC.
• Caldwell is currently on a two-game winning streak with wins over Post and Felician.
• Nicole Angelo leads the team averaging 15.3 points and also leads the team in assists with 30.
• As a team, the Cougars average 71.9 points per game while shooting 41.4 percent from the floor and 37.8 percent from long range.

SCOUTING SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS
• The Spartans enter Sunday's game with a 7-2 overall record, but will play the Univ. of New Haven on Dec. 18.
• Jenna Erickson leads the team in both points and assists, as she averages 16.0 points and 2.4 assists per game.
• As a team, the Spartans average 64.9 points a game while shooting 37.4 percent from the field and 33.1 from behind the arc.

ALL-TIME AGAINST CALDWELL
Southern Connecticut leads the all-time series against Caldwell 2-0.

LAST TIME AGAINST CALDWELL
The last time Southern Connecticut and Caldwell met was on Dec. 22, 2005 as the Owls defeated the Cougars 65-28.

ALL-TIME AGAINST SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS
Southern Connecticut and Saint Thomas Aquinas are tied in the all-times series at 2-2.

LAST SEASON AGAINST SAINT THOMAS
Last season, Saint Thomas Aquinas defeated the Owls by the score of 63-61. Jackie Beathea recorded a double-double in that game with 28 points and 14 rebounds.

LAST TIME OUT
Ten different Owls scored for the women's basketball team in its 82-48 victory over Northeast-10 Conference foe Pace University at Moore Field House on Saturday afternoon. Also, this was the first win by 30 or more points since December 30, 2011 against Dominican College.

POWELL NAMED CT ARMY NATIONAL GUARD/ SCSU FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
For the first time this season, senior forward Danielle Powell has been named this week's CT Army National Guard/SCSU Female Athlete of the Week. In week five, she led the team averaging 14.0 points on 13-of-25 shooting from the floor and 1-of-2 shooting from behind the arc.

OWLS RANKS 10TH IN D2SIDA EAST REGION RANKINGS
After posting a 2-0 record last week, the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team is ranked No. 10 in the latest  Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region rankings.

BEATHEA CLOSING IN ON 1,000 REBOUNDS
As of Dec. 14, Jackie Beathea is only 46 rebounds away from recording her 1,000th career rebound.

MURAD SETS CAREER-HIGH IN ASSISTS
In the 69-53 win over Concordia, redshirt sophomore Murphy Murad recorded a career-high five assists.

BEATHEA RECORDS FIFTH DOUBLE-DOUBLE
In the 82-48 win over Pace, Jackie Beathea recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds. 

GROSSBARD TIES CAREER-HIGH IN ASSISTS
In the win over Pace, senior guard Nicole Grossbard tied her career-high nine assists and added two rebounds, 10 points and three steals.

OWLS AMONG NCAA LEADERS
According to the NCAA Ranking Summary (12/14):
Jackie Beathea ranks:
• fourth in rebounds per game with 12.6.
• first in offensive rebounds per game with 7.0
• second in total rebounds with 126.0.
• 17th in double-double with five.
Nicole Grossbard ranks:
• 12th in total assists with 55.
• 22nd in assists per game with 5.5.

NORTHEAST-10 LEADERS (as of 12/14)
Jackie Beathea not only leads the team, but leads the conference in rebounds averaging 12.6 a contest.
Maria Weselyj is second in the conference with a three-point shooting percentage of 51.9 percent. 
Nicole Grossbard is third in the league in assists averaging 5.5 a game.

BEATHEA SETS NEW SCSU SINGLE GAME-HIGH
In the win against the Eagles, Jackie Beathea set a new SCSU single game-high in rebounds with 22. She posted 10 rebounds in the first half and 12 rebounds in the second half.

NEW ARRIVALS
The Owls welcome four newcomers to the squad for the 2015-16 season – Jana Migliaro, Amanda Pfohl, Allie Smith and Erin Ryder.

WELCOME BACK
Southern Connecticut returns 13 players from last year's squad – seniors Liz McKinley, Jacqueline Deens, Jackie Beathea, Nicole Grossbard and Danielle Powell, juniors Taylor McLaughlin and Maria Weselyj, sophomores Chandler Williams, Abby Hurlbert, Paige Decker Chloe Brinton and Kendra Meredith, red-shirt sophomore Murphy Murad.

LYNCH NOTE
Kate Lynch '08 begins her first full season as head coach for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team. Lynch has compiled a 81-65 overall record as a head coach. Lynch remains the all-time leading scorer in Owls' history (1,779 points) and ranks fifth all-time in rebounds (650).

Southern Connecticut was selected fourth in the Southwest Division according to the Northeast-10 Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.

TRI-CAPTAINS
Senior Jacqueline Deens, Nicole Grossbard and Danielle Powell will serve as team tri-captains for the Owls this winter.

LOOKING BACK ON THE SEASON THAT WAS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team closed the regular season with 14 wins and qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Owls had one student-athlete recognized by the league with year-end honors.

BEATHEA NAMED ALL-NE-10
For the third year in a row, Jackie Beathea earned All-Conference honors after an impressive season as she led the Owls in scoring with 384 points and rebounds with 323. She also recorded 16 double-doubles.

AMONG THE NE-10 LEADERS
Amongst the returners, the Owls had three players finish in the top five of Northeast-10 Conference participants in four categories.
Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in rebounds per game, pulling down 11.1 per contest.
Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in offensive rebounds per game, pulling down 5.0 per contest.
Nicole Grossbard finished No. 2 in assists per game, recording 4.9 per contest.
Danielle Powell finished No. 2 in blocks per game, tallying 2.0 per contest.

EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had 11 student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2014-15 academic year.

UP NEXT
The Owls return to action on Dec. 30 as the team wraps up their six-game homestead with a non-conference game against Georgian Court. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Moore Field House.
