WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Despite being tied at halftime 31-31, the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team could not stop New Haven's second half run as the Owls fell 67-55 on Wednesday evening at Charger Gymnasium in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown. Following the loss, the Owls fall to 4-3 on the season and 0-3 in the conference while New Haven improves to 4-3 and 2-2.
Senior
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) recorded her fourth double-double of the season as she led the Owls with 15 points, 14 rebounds and a steal. Junior
Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) registered 11 points, five rebounds and two steals while senior
Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds and a block.
Southern Connecticut and New Haven came out with vengeance to start off the first quarter as both teams kept each other from scoring over the first three minutes of play. At the 7:11 mark,
Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) was able to find Powell down low for the first basket of the game, but an 8-0 run put the Chargers ahead 8-2. Within the last three minutes, Southern Connecticut was able to come up with a 7-4 run to bring the score to within three, 12-9, to close out the quarter.
Despite trailing at the end of the first, Southern Connecticut was able to come out of the short break with a great mind set and tied the Chargers at 18-18 after five straight points from Beathea and a deep three from Weselyj at the 6:59 mark. After 14 minutes of trailing the hosts, Powell made a deep jumper to put the Owls a head 20-18, but the Chargers were able to resume their lead, 26-23. It wasn't until two made free throws from
Kendra Meredith (Boyds, Md.) that the Owls found themselves a head 29-28 with 1:55 to go. However, Southern Connecticut and New Haven were tied 31-31 heading into halftime.
New Haven came out of the locker room with a 4-0 run to start off the third quarter until a layup from Beathea made it another one possession game, 35-33. However, a 6-0 run gave the Chargers an eight-point lead, 41-33, but Southern Connecticut answered back with a 10-6 run to bring the score to within four, 47-43, with 1:54 remaining in the quarter. But, New Haven ended the frame with a 5-0 run putting them a head 52-45.
Powell started off the final quarter with a deep two to bring the Owls to within five, 52-47, but New Haven kept its lead to above five for the next seven minutes. At the 1:43 mark, senior
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) was able to get the steal and the fast break layup to cut the lead to five, 60-55, but New Haven sealed the 67-55 home victory.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday, Dec. 5th as they host the College of Saint Rose at Moore Field House in a NE-10 Conference battle. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m.
