No. 20 Owls Stage Late Comeback but Fall Short to U. Sciences 104-92

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 20 Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia by a final score of 104-92 on Sunday afternoon. Southern was down by as much as 24 in the second half and came charging back behind Austin Carter's (Bloomfield, Conn.) great day, but the Owls ran out of time. Carter finished with a career high 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting with eight rebounds, five assists and four blocks. Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) and Desmond Williams (Torrington, Conn.) also put in 20 points, each, for the Owls.



The Devils' lead was 24 with 11:08 remaining when Southern began to come back. Carter scored a dunk and a three pointer on back-to-back possessions to cut the lead to 17. Then, with under five minutes remaining, a 7-0 run capped by a Toby Christensen (Gentofte, Denmark) three pointer got the Owls to within nine. Southern began to foul U. Sciences on its next possession with 3:50 remaining in the game. The Owls would foul every time the Devils got the ball for the remainder of the game - the Devils hit 20-of-22 of those final free throw attempts.

Southern Connecticut was outscored 45-30 in the first half but outscored U. Sciences 62-59 in the second half. Sixty-two points is the most the Owls have scored in a half this season, their previous high being 60. The team shot 54-percent from the field in the second half, compared to 39-percent in the first. U. Sciences shot 56.5-percent from the field - the most of any Southern opponent this season.

The Owls are off this upcoming week and return to action Saturday, January 2 when they travel to Le Moyne for a 12 p.m. game.
