Women’s Basketball Scheduled for Two Northeast-10 Conference Games This Week

Women's Hoops will host its annual "Think Pink" game on Saturday against No. 9 Adelphi.

IT'S COMING DOWN TO THE WIRE
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team returns home to host two crucial games against No.9 Adelphi and Merrimack College. The Owls will hosts the Panthers on Saturday afternoon at Moore Field House as part of their annual "Think Pink" Game. After having the game postponed twice, the Owls will take on the Warriors on Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS GAME
Fans are encouraged to wear PINK on Saturday's game against No. 9 Adelphi as the Owls will be hosting their annual "Think Pink" game in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
 
ALL-TIME AGAINST THE PANTHERS
Southern Conn. holds a 9-8 edge over the Panthers in the all-time series.
 
LAST SEASON AGAINST THE PANTHERS
Southern Conn. went 0-2 last season against Adelphi University as the Owls lost both games. In the first meeting, the Owls lost 92-66 and loss the second game by the score of 94-76.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST THE WARRIORS
Southern Conn. leads the all-time series against the Warriors, 13-6.

LAST SEASON AGAINST THE WARRIORS
Jackie Beathea and Keshia Primo both scored over 20 points apiece as the women's basketball team defeated Merrimack, 72-62, in North Andover, Mass on January 28, 2014.
 
D2SIDA EAST REGION RANKINGS
The women's basketball remains tied at No. 10 in the latest Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region rankings. Last week, the Owls (13-10, 10-5 NE-10) were tied with NE-10 Southwest Division foe Le Moyne College, but this week the Owls are tied in 10th with NYIT (15-5).
 
NE-10 SOUTHWEST DIVISION STANDINGS
The Owls remain third in the Southwest Division. Adelphi and New Haven still claim the No. 1 and No. 2 spot, respectively.
 
DOUBLE FIGURES
Southern Connecticut had five players score in double-figures last week as sophomore Taylor McLaughlin led the way with 15.0 points and 5.0 rebounds. Junior Jackie Beathea was right behind McLaughlin with 14.5 points as well as recorded her 12th double-double of the season against New Haven. Sophomore Maria and senior Mariah Hankton chipped in with 12.0 points each while junior Danielle Powell rounded out the quartet with 10.5 points.

DOUBLE-DOUBLES
Juniors Jackie Beathea and Danielle Powell each recorded a double-double in last week's games. Beathea tallied her 12th double-double against New Haven, 19 points and 12 rebounds. Powell picked up her fifth double-double, 10 points and 12 rebounds against Le Moyne.
 
NE-10 WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
This week Jackie Beathea and Taylor McLaughlin were both named to the NE-10 Weekly Honor roll for their performance in last week's games against New Haven and Le Moyne College.
 
SENIOR DAY
Next week, head coach Bert DeSalvo and the SCSU women's basketball team will be recognizing seniors Mariah Hankton and Sydni Lester as part of Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 21. The ceremony will begin prior to tip-off against the College of Saint Rose.
 
AMONG NCAA LEADERS
As of 2/8, Nicole Grossbard, Jackie Beathea and Danielle Powell are ranked among the Div. II leaders. Grossbard ranks 21st averaging 5.3 assists per game while Beathea ranks second in offensive rebounds per game (5.0), is 19th in rebounds per game (11.3) and is 16th in double-doubles (12). Powell is ranked 37th averaging 2.04 blocks per game.

OFFENSIVELY AND DEFENSIVELY
As of 2/8, the Owls are ranked among the top 50 nationally Div. II programs in one statistical categories. The Owls are 18th in offensive rebounds per game (17.0).

BEATHEA LEADS SCSU CAREER LEADERS
Jackie Beathea ranks second in the SCSU all-time career rebounding category with 766 rebounds and tied the single-game high of 19 rebounds on 11/19/14 at Adelphi.

BENCH SUCCESS
Southern Conn. has benefitted from increased scoring output from nearly its entire roster this season. The team has totaled 1614 points this season while 553 of those points come from off the bench.

CONFERENCE HONORS
Jackie Beathea (eight times), Taylor McLaughlin (five times), Danielle Powell (four times), Mariah Hankton (five times) and Maria Weselyj (once) have all been named to the Northeast-10 Conference Honor Roll this Honor Roll this season thus far.

NEW ARRIVALS
The Owls welcome six newcomers to the squad for the 2014-15 season - Kendra MeredithChloe BrintonPaige DeckerAbby HurlbertLiz McKinley and Chandler Williams.

Southern Connecticut returns nine players from last year's squad – seniors Mariah Hankton and Sydney Lester, juniors Danielle PowellNicole GrossbardJackie Beathea and Jaqueline Deens, sophomores Maria Weselyj and Taylor McLaughlinand redshirt freshman Murphy Murad.

DESALVO NOTE
Bert DeSalvo is in his first full season as head coach for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team. Entering the season, DeSalvo had compiled a 99-26 (.792) overall record as a head coach.

IN THE POLLS
Southern Connecticut was selected seventh in the Southwest Division according to the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Senior Mariah Hankton and junior Nicole Grossbard will serve as team captains for the Owls this winter.

LOOKING BACK ON THE SEASON THAT WAS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team closed the regular season with 12 wins and qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Owls had three student-athletes recognized by the league with year-end honors.

TWO NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS
Jackie Beathea was selected Third Team All-Conference and freshman standoutTaylor McLaughlin was named to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team last year.

AMONG THE NE-10 LEADERS
Amongst the returners, the Owls had two players finish in the top 10 of Northeast-10 Conference participants in three categories.
• Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in rebounds per game, pulling down 10.1 per contest.
• Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in offensive rebounds per game, pulling 4.8 per contest.
• Sydney Lester finished No. 5 in steals, tallying 2.1 per contest.

EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had nine student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2013-14 academic year.

ON DECK
The Owls return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 18th as the team takes on Pace University in New York, N.Y. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
