Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Five players scored in double digits, led by 19 points and seven assists from senior
Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.), as the No. 18/25 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team defeated Saint Rose, 83-58, on Saturday afternoon.
The Owls won their ninth in a row and improved to 22-5 overall and 16-3 in Northeast-10 Conference action. Southern's win coupled with American International's loss today clinched the NE-10 Southwest Division crown for the Owls for the second year in a row.
Prior to the game, the Owls honored their three seniors – Smith,
Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) and
Jose Cruz (Shrewsbury, Mass.).
Desmond Williams (Torrington, Conn.) posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while
Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) also had 15 points. Houston and
Deshawn Murphy (Hamden, Conn.) both had 12 points.
Saint Rose scored the first basket of the game, but after Murphy connected on a three, the Owls never trailed again. The game was even at 8-8, but Southern bolted ahead with a 16-0 run and was never really tested from there. The Owls led by 18 at halftime, 34-16.
SCSU led by as many as 28 points in the second half on the way to the win.
The Owls are back in action on Tuesday for a road game at AIC to conclude the regular season.
