Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) connected on the game-winning basket at the final buzzer as the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Saint Rose, 65-63, in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. With the win, the Owls assured themselves the No. 3 slot in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championship.
Prior to the game, the Owls recognized seniors
Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and
Sydni Lester (Teaneck, N .J.) for their contributions to the program.
Beathea registered her 14th double-double of the year with 17 points and 11 rebounds in the contest. Sophomore
Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) also scored 17 off the bench for the Owls. Lester tallied a dozen as well as posted two steals, an assist and three rebounds.
Southern Connecticut improved to 14-13, 11-8 in league action, while Saint Rose is 11-15 and 7-13.
The Owls jumped out to an early 11-2 lead before Saint Rose countered with a 10-0 run. Southern forged back in front on a Beathea layup and didn't trail again until well into the second half.
SCSU led by as many as a dozen in the first half and held a 40-31 lead at intermission.
Saint Rose eventually fought back and took the lead briefly in the second half at 55-53. From there, the contest was highly competitive down the stretch.
The Golden Knights evened the score with 9.2 seconds to go, but SCSU took advantage of its last possession, as Beathea's shot rattled around the iron and eventually went in with no time left on the clock.
The Owls are back in action on Tuesday for a road game at AIC to close the regular season.
