Women's Basketball Set to Take on Franklin Pierce Sunday in NE-10 Quarterfinals

First Round – Friday, February 27

Quarterfinals – Sunday, March 1

HEADING INTO THE NE-10 CHAMPIONSHIP
Despite ending the season with a, 53-43, loss to American International on Tuesday, the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team remains No. 3 in the upcoming NE-10 Championship. On Sunday, the Owls will be traveling north to Rindge, N.H. to take on No. 2 Franklin Pierce in the second round of the NE-10 Championship.

ALL-TIME AGAINST FRANKLIN PIERCE
Franklin Pierce leads the all-time series against the Owls, 32-16.

PREVIOUSLY AGAINST THE RAVENS
This season Southern Conn. defeated Franklin Pierce at home, 71-63. Senior guard Mariah Hankton led the Owls for the third-straight game with 19 points and eight rebounds.

SCOUTING THE RAVENS
-Franklin Pierce concluded the regular season with a 17-9 overall record and a 13-8 mark in the Northeast-10 Conference.
-Kara Charette leads the team and ranks third in the conference averaging 17.6 points while shooting 52.9 percent from the field.
-As a team, the Ravens rank second in the conference in free throws made per game (14.8) as well as leads the conference with a 77.8 free throw percentage.
-At home Franklin Pierce, is shooting 46.4 percent from the floor, 81.4 percent from the line while averaging 40.2 rebounds and 72.9 points.

DEJA VU
Sunday's contest is also a rematch of a first-round contest from last season's Northeast-10 Championship, a game which also took place in Rindge. The Ravens scored a 74-66 victory in that contest. Keshia Primo, who graduated, poured in a game-high 29 points in defeat for SCSU.

ALL-CONFERENCE SELECTION
Junior forward Jackie Beathea has recieved All-Conference honors by the Northeast-10, announced Thursday afternoon. Beathea has been recognized by the NE-10 Conference as a Second Team selection.

TUESDAY AGAINST AIC
The women's basketball dropped its regular season finale to American International, 53-43, Tuesday evening at Henry A. Butova Gymnasium.  

DOUBLING UP
This past Tuesday, Jackie Beathea recorded her 16th double-double of the year, 11 points and 12 rebounds, as well as posted an assist, a block and a steal.

CAREER NIGHTS ALL AROUND
Junior Nicole Grossbard set a new career-high with 15 points on the road against Pace. On Saturday, Kendra Meredith tied her career-high two points while Abby Hurlbert set a new career-high five points.

MOVING UP THE LADDER
Jackie Beathea ranks second in the SCSU all-time career rebounding category with 814 rebounds and tied the single-game high of 19 rebounds on 11/19/14 at Adelphi. She also ranks 16th in the SCSU all-time career points with 1,094.

AMONG NCAA LEADERS
As of 2/26, Nicole Grossbard, Jackie Beathea and Danielle Powell are ranked among the Div. II leaders. Grossbard ranks 26th averaging 5.0 assists per game while Beathea ranks third in offensive rebounds per game (5.0), is 14th in rebounds per game (11.4), is 17th in double-doubles (15) and 43rd in field-goal percentage (51.4%). Powell is ranked 27th averaging 2.11 blocks per game.

OFFENSIVELY AND DEFENSIVELY
As of 2/26, the Owls are ranked among the top 50 nationally Div. II programs in two statistical categories. The Owls are 27th in offensive rebounds per game (16.0) and 47th in blocks (4.0).

BENCH SUCCESS
Southern Conn. has benefitted from increased scoring output from nearly its entire roster this season. The team has totaled 1905 points this season while 639 of those points come from off the bench.

CONFERENCE HONORS
Jackie Beathea (10 times), Taylor McLaughlin (five times), Danielle Powell (four times), Mariah Hankton (five times) and Maria Weselyj (once) have all been named to the Northeast-10 Conference Honor Roll this Honor Roll this season thus far.

NEW ARRIVALS
The Owls welcome six newcomers to the squad for the 2014-15 season - Kendra Meredith, Chloe Brinton, Paige Decker, Abby Hurlbert, Liz McKinley and Chandler Williams.

WELCOME BACK
Southern Connecticut returns nine players from last year's squad – seniors Mariah Hankton and Sydney Lester, juniors Danielle Powell, Nicole Grossbard, Jackie Beathea and Jaqueline Deens, sophomores Maria Weselyj and Taylor McLaughlinand redshirt freshman Murphy Murad.

DESALVO NOTE
Bert DeSalvo is in his first full season as head coach for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team. Entering the season, DeSalvo had compiled a 99-26 (.792) overall record as a head coach.

IN THE POLLS
Southern Connecticut was selected seventh in the Southwest Division according to the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Senior Mariah Hankton and junior Nicole Grossbard will serve as team captains for the Owls this winter.

LOOKING BACK ON THE SEASON THAT WAS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team closed the regular season with 12 wins and qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Owls had three student-athletes recognized by the league with year-end honors.

TWO NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS
Jackie Beathea was selected Third Team All-Conference and freshman standout Taylor McLaughlin was named to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team last year.

AMONG THE NE-10 LEADERS
Amongst the returners, the Owls had two players finish in the top 10 of Northeast-10 Conference participants in three categories.
• Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in rebounds per game, pulling down 10.1 per contest.
• Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in offensive rebounds per game, pulling 4.8 per contest.
• Sydney Lester finished No. 5 in steals, tallying 2.1 per contest.

EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had nine student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2013-14 academic year.
