Women's Hoops Tackles Cross-Town Rival New Haven, Challenges Le Moyne Saturday Afternoon

The Owls welcome cross-town rival the Univ. of New Haven to Moore Field House Wednesday night for a Northeast-10 Conference showdown.
NORTHEAST-10 SOUTHWEST DIVISION PLAY RESUMES
After posting back-to-back victories against Franklin Pierce and Assumption College, the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball game looks to continue its winning ways as the team welcomes cross-town rival New Haven to Moore Field House Wednesday evening. The Owls will then wrap up the weekend in Syracuse, N.Y. as they take on Le Moyne College Saturday afternoon.
 
ALL-TIME AGAINST CHARGERS
New Haven leads the all-time series against the Owls, 38-24.
 
THIS SEASON AGAINST CHARGERS
Southern Conn. was defeated by New Haven, 79-76, on Jan. 3. In the final two minutes of the game, the Owls came out firing on all cylinders managing a 10-3 run and taking its first lead of the half, 71-70. New Haven came right back to take the lead until a three from Mariah Hankton brought the score to within one, 77-76, with 10 seconds remaining. However, New Haven came out on top, 79-76, after back-to-back free throws from Elizabeth Cruso.
 
ALL-TIME AGAINST DOLPHINS
The Owls hold a 19-12 edge over the Dolphins in the all-time series.
 
THIS SEASON AGAINST DOLPHINS
Back on Dec. 13, the Owls defeated Le Moyne, 76-64, at Moore Field House. Mariah Hankton led the Owls in scoring with 13 points while Jackie Beathea recorded her seventh double-double of the season.
 
D2SIDA EAST REGION RANKINGS
The women's basketball team is tied in 10th in this week's Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region rankings. Le Moyne and the Owls each finished with two points in the poll while Le Moyne dropped from eighth to 10th. This is the first time this season the Owls have been tabbed in the east region rankings.
 
NE-10 SOUTHWEST DIVISION STANDINGS
Following Saturday's win against the Greyhounds, the Owls remain third in the Southwest Division. Adelphi and New Haven still claim the No. 1 and No. 2 spot, respectively.
 
SCHEDULE NOTE
Due to the recent snowfall, the Southern Conn. – Merrimack College women's basketball game scheduled for Monday, Feb. 2 will now be played on Monday, Feb. 16 at 5:30 p.m.
 
DOUBLE FIGURES
Four different players registered in double-digits in Saturday's, 81-71, win against Assumption. Maria Weselyj led the Owls with 20 points while Mariah Hankton recorded another 19 points. Jackie Beathea and Taylor McLaughlin chipped in with 12 and points, respectively.

WESELYJ TIES AND SETS CAREER-HIGH
Maria Weselyj tied her career-high 20 points and set a new career-high one block last Saturday. She was 7-of-11 from the field and 4-of-6 from long range while recording two rebounds and an assist. 
 
NE-10 WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
This week Maria Weselyj and Mariah Hankton were both named to the NE-10 Weekly Honor roll for their performance in last week's game against Assumption.
 
SENIOR DAY
In just a few weeks, head coach Bert DeSalvo and the SCSU women's basketball team will be recognizing seniors Mariah Hankton and Sydni Lester as part of Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 21. The ceremony will begin prior to tip-off against the College of Saint Rose.
 
AMONG NCAA LEADERS
As of 2/1, Nicole Grossbard, Jackie Beathea and Danielle Powell are ranked among the Div. II leaders. Grossbard ranks 24th averaging 5.0 assists per game while Beathea ranks second in offensive rebounds per game (5.0), is 15th in rebounds per game (11.5), is 18th in double-doubles (11) and 14th in rebounds per game (12.1). Powell is ranked 27th averaging 2.14 blocks per game.

OFFENSIVELY AND DEFENSIVELY
As of 2/1, the Owls are ranked among the top 50 nationally Div. II programs in four statistical categories. The Owls are No. 46 in blocks per game (4.0), No. 48th in three-point field goal defense (28.2), 20th in offensive rebounds per game (17.0) and 50th in defensive rebounds per game (28.0).

BEATHEA LEADS SCSU CAREER LEADERS
Jackie Beathea leads the SCSU all-time career rebounding category with 841 rebounds and tied the single-game high of 19 rebounds on 11/19/14 at Adelphi. 

BENCH SUCCESS
Southern Conn. has benefitted from increased scoring output from nearly its entire roster this season. The team has totaled 1466 points this season while 499 of those points come from off the bench. 

CONFERENCE HONORS
Jackie Beathea (seven times), Taylor McLaughlin (four times), Danielle Powell (four times), Mariah Hankton (five times) and Maria Weselyj (once) have all been named to the Northeast-10 Conference Honor Roll this Honor Roll this season thus far.

NEW ARRIVALS
The Owls welcome six newcomers to the squad for the 2014-15 season - Kendra Meredith, Chloe Brinton, Paige Decker, Abby Hurlbert, Liz McKinley and Chandler Williams.

WELCOME BACK
Southern Connecticut returns nine players from last year's squad – seniors Mariah Hankton and Sydney Lester, juniors Danielle Powell, Nicole Grossbard, Jackie Beathea and Jaqueline Deens, sophomores Maria Weselyj and Taylor McLaughlinand redshirt freshman Murphy Murad.

DESALVO NOTE
Bert DeSalvo is in his first full season as head coach for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team. Entering the season, DeSalvo had compiled a 99-26 (.792) overall record as a head coach.

IN THE POLLS
Southern Connecticut was selected seventh in the Southwest Division according to the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Senior Mariah Hankton and junior Nicole Grossbard will serve as team captains for the Owls this winter.

LOOKING BACK ON THE SEASON THAT WAS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team closed the regular season with 12 wins and qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Owls had three student-athletes recognized by the league with year-end honors.

TWO NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS
Jackie Beathea was selected Third Team All-Conference and freshman standout Taylor McLaughlin was named to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team last year.

AMONG THE NE-10 LEADERS
Amongst the returners, the Owls had two players finish in the top 10 of Northeast-10 Conference participants in three categories.
• Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in rebounds per game, pulling down 10.1 per contest.
• Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in offensive rebounds per game, pulling 4.8 per contest.
• Sydney Lester finished No. 5 in steals, tallying 2.1 per contest.

EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had nine student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2013-14 academic year.

ON DECK
The Owls return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14 as the team welcomes Adelphi University to Moore Field House for a NE-10 Conference clash. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
