Women's Basketball Falls to Cross-Town Rival New Haven, 82-75

Jackie Beathea tallied her 12th double-double of the season, 19 points and 12 rebounds, against the Chargers.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Despite a double-double performance by junior Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.), the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to cross-town rival the University of New Haven, 82-75, at Moore Field House. Following the loss, the Owls drop to 12-10 overall and 9-5 in the conference, while the Chargers improve to 18-3 on the season and 12-3 in the NE-10.

Beathea recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds as well as tallied an assist and a steal. Sophomore Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) led the Owls' offense with a team-high 21 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal over 30 minutes of play. Sophomore Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) recorded 11 points on of 4-of-4 shooting from the line and 3-of-13 from the field. Senior Sydni Lester (Teaneck, N.J.) rounded out the Owls' double-digit scoring with 10 points and four rebounds.



The Owls fell behind as many as six in the early going, as the Chargers quick start spotted them a 10-4 lead just 4:14 into the game. The Owls then caught fire from the field, going on a 12-5 run over the next four minutes to take its first lead of the game, 16-15. Southern Connecticut maintained its lead until the 7:22 mark as the Chargers regained the lead off a layup from Brianna Bradford, 27-26.

With 6:46 to go before halftime, the Owls retook the lead, 29-28, but shortly after New Haven extended its lead to four, 29-33, after five-straight points from Sade King. In the final minute of the half, a jumper by Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) put the host up one, 35-34, but New Haven held a 36-35 lead heading into halftime.

Similar to the start of the game, New Haven came out of the locker room grabbing a 44-37 lead over the Owls just four minutes in. Over the next seven minutes of play, Southern Connecticut continued to chip away at the Chargers' lead as a three-pointer from McLaughlin brought the score to within two, 59-57.



With the clock winding down, New Haven continued to keep its lead to single digits, but a three-point play by McLaughlin tied the game at 75-75 with a 1:12 remaining. However, it was New Haven who secured the 82-75 win over the Owls, ending the game on a 7-0 run.

The Owls return to action on Saturday, Feb. 7 as the team travels to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on Le Moyne College. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
