No. 16 Nationally Ranked Owls Kick Off Year With Two Games

The Owls open the season with two games this week.

A NEW SEASON BEGINS
The No. 16 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team opens the 2015 campaign with two neutral site games this weekend at Adelphi in Garden City, New York. The Owls open against Dominican College on Thursday evening and follow it up with an afternoon game against No. 11 nationally ranked LIU-Post on Saturday.

ALL-TIME VS. DOMINICAN
The Owls lead the all-time series against the Chargers with a record of 3-0-2, with the last game being a 1-0 win for SCSU in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

ALL-TIME VS. LIU-POST
The Owls lead the all-time series versus LIU-Post by a tally of 8-0-1. Southern Connecticut beat the Pioneers 1-0 in last year's season opener.

THE PRESEASON NE-10 COACHES POLL
SCSU was picked second in the NE-10 preseason coaches poll.  The Owls received 154 points and one first place vote out of 14.

LOOKING BACK AT LAST SEASON
The Owls finished 2014 with a 15-5 record and a No. 17 national ranking in the NSCAA poll. SCSU reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and before that, qualified for the finals of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Owls averaged just over two goals per game, with Daquan King and Markus Jacobsen leading the team with 10 goals each. Defense was the Owls' strength. Led by NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year Sebastian Brems, they allowed 1.16 goals per game. Freshman keeper Noah Varonier was a stud in net for the Owls, saving 71-percent of the shots he faced.

THE CAPTAIN
Head coach Tom Lang announced that redshirt senior Tyler Naef will captain the Owls this fall. This will mark the second straight year that Naef will serve as a team captain.

SCORING PUNCH COMING BACK
Southern Connecticut will see two of its top five scorers from last season return - Markus Jacobsen and Chae Brangman. Brangman finished second on the team last year with six goals. The next highest returning scorers are Brandon Rowlinson and Ignacio Navarro, who each scored two goals last year.

2014 ALL-CONFERENCE PERFORMERS
Seven players from the 2014 team were named to the All-Conference Team:
• Sebastian Brems was named First-Team All-Conference and NE-10 Defender of the year.
• Daquan King and Mads Larsen were named Second-Team All-Conference.
• Chae Brangman, Jonas Folstad, and Markus Jacobsen were named Third-Team All-Conference.
• Brangman and Noah Varonier were named to the All-Rookie Team.
• Brangman was also named Rookie of the Year.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB
The Owls welcome 14 newcomers to the squad for the 2015 season, including freshmen Ansbito Basquin, Jose Canahui, Weens Simon, Seth Dasher, Daniel Silva, Alejandro Rivera, Dylan Hogan, Alex Brown, and Daniel Prendergast. The Owls also welcome transfers Louis Greenway-Tambini, Sean Black, Alain Laurent, Mitchel White and Joe Lucas Santos.

IN SEASON OPENERS 
The Owls are 31-9-6 in season openers.

LOOKING BACK AT 2014
The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team was ranked as high as No. 1 in the region and No. 5 in the nation in 2014.

TRIO NAMED ALL-ECAC/QUARTET ALL-REGION
Sebastian Brems, Daquan King, and Mads Larsen were named All-ECAC for their efforts on the pitch during the 2014 season. Brems, Markus Jacobsen, Jonas Folstad, and Chae Brangman were named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire Division II All-East Region Team.

ON DECK
Following the neutral site games this week, the Owls return home to take on Le Moyne on Saturday, September 12 at 1 p.m.
