SCSU Men's Soccer Falls to Adelphi 4-2 in NE10 Conference Tournament Quarterfinals

Garden Ctiy, N.Y.-- Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer fell to Adelphi 4-2 Saturday in the first round of the Northeast 10 Conference Tournament. With the loss, the Owls fell to 8-5-4 overall and 4-2-3 in the NE10. With the win, Adelphi moved to 9-5-3 overall and 5-3-1 in the NE10 and they advance to the semifinals of the Northeast 10 conference tournament. 

The Owls offense opened the scoring early when in the second minute, Ryad Benmessaoud drew a foul setting up a free kick from just outside the 18 yard box. Benmessaoud took the free kick and put the ball in the top right corner of the goal just passed the outstretched goalkeeper. The goal was Benmessaoud's third of the season, with his third in four games. Benmessaoud's three goals tie him for second on the team with Jake Novoshelski and Edward Mensah. 

After Adelphi answered the 15th minute tying the game at 1-1. The Owls added another goal just before the half. In the 44th minute, Jeremy Martin headed to the corner. Martin's cross found the head of Giancarlo Ciatoli who sent a shot on goal that was blocked. Off of the ricochet, Mensah sent another header to the left side of the goal giving the Owls a 2-1 lead. The goal was Mensah's third of the season tying him for second on the team in goals.

Along with the goal scorers, Diego Flores added four saves 

That would be the last goal of the night for the Owls, and Adelphi would add three more in the second half taking the game 4-2 and advancing to the semifinals of the Northeast 10 Conference tournament.
