Box Score 2 NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team dropped a pair of home matches Saturday afternoon against Bloomfield College and West Chester University of Pennsylvania at Pelz Gymnasium. The Owls were defeated 3-0 in both sets and drop to 2-6 on the season.
Match 1 vs. Bloomfield – Bloomfield 3 | SCSU 0
Set Scores: 25-19 (BLO), 25-23 (BLO), 25-20 (BLO)
Southern Connecticut took control of the court to start off the first set 6-3. Shortly after, Bloomfield rallied back on a 4-1 run to tie the match at 7-all. Following a Bloomfield service ace, both teams traded leads and led for no more than two points. With the score in favor of the hosts 20-19, Bloomfield secured the win, 25-19 on a 5-0 run.
Just like set one, both team traded leads and led for no more than two points to start off the second set. Bloomfield found themselves ahead by three, 12-9, and continued to extend its lead to six, 21-15, forcing an Owls' timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Southern Connecticut managed to cut the lead to one, 23-22, but the Bears took set two from the Owls 25-23.
Bloomfield continued to run its offense as the team grabbed a 5-1 lead over the Owls to start off the third set. Southern Connecticut slowly chipped away at the Bears' lead as a kill from
Faith Ford (New Britain, Conn.) brought the score to within one, 13-11. Bloomfield kept its lead over the Owls for the remainder of the frame and prevailed in set three 25-20.
Freshman
Leanna Jadus (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 14 digs while tallying two solo blocks and an assist. Senior
Kelly Gunneson (Cheshire, Conn.) led the Owls with a team-high 14 kills, a service ace, an assist and two digs. Sophomore
Alexandra Nimz (Littleton, Colo.) assisted 26 of the Owls' 42 kills.
Match 2 vs. West Chester University of Pennsylvania: WCUP 3 | SCSU 0
Set Scores: 25-13 (WCU), 25-13 (WCU), 25-13 (WCU)
West Chester took control of the first set as the team jumped out to a 9-3 lead over the hosts. The Owls managed to bring the score to within eight, 18-10, but West Chester prevailed 25-13.
The second set was a little bit different then the first as Southern Connecticut kept up with West Chester and found themselves down seven, 17-10. However, West Chester took set two from the Owls, 25-13.
The third set was all West Chester University as they defeated the Owls 25-13.
Jasmin Barrett (Stamdford, Conn.) and
Sean Taylor (Kent, Wash.) led the Owls in match two with six kills each while Nimz chipped in with 20 assists. Senior
Morgan Carman (Mesa, Ariz.) led the Owls' defense with seven digs.
