WORCESTER, Mass. – Despite two double-double performances from
Leanna Jadus (Long Beach, Calif.) and
Carly Balskus (Hebron, Conn.), the Southern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team dropped a thrilling, five-set battled to Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown on Tuesday evening. The Owls now fall to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Freshman
Leanna Jadus (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded her seventh career double-double against the Greyhounds with 14 kills and 20 digs. Sophomore
Carly Balskus (Hebron, Conn.) tallied her first career double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs. Jadus also added two assists, two service aces and four blocks while Balskus chipped in with two assists, three service aces and three blocks.
The first set opened up with five ties until Southern Connecticut extended its lead to four, 11-7, following a 4-0 run sparked by
Sean Taylor (Kent, Wash.). Assumption rallied back to tie the set for a sixth time, 14-14, before another 4-0 run by the hosts extended its lead to four, 18-14. The Greyhounds continued to push ahead 23-19, but a kill from Balskus brought the score to within one, 24-23. It didn't stop there as both teams battled past the 25 mark and tied the match at 30-30. Assumption prevailed scoring the final two points of the set to take a 1-0 lead over the Owls.
Southern Connecticut took control of the second set 10-7, but Assumption tied the frame at 10-all after an attack error by Taylor. The hosts were able to capitalize on the error and take its first lead of the frame, 11-10. Assumption continued to push ahead, 20-17, but a 4-0 run by the Owls gave the visitors a one-point lead, 21-20, heading into a Greyhounds' timeout. Southern Connecticut remained ahead for the rest of the set, 25-22, and tied the match at 1-1.
Southern Connecticut kept the momentum on its side as the Owls doubled their lead, 20-10, in the third set. The Greyhounds chipped away at the Owls' lead, but the visitors took set three 25-16.
Just like the first set both teams went through 10 ties until Assumption took control 29-16, forcing an Owls' timeout. Following the timeout, Southern Connecticut rallied together two points, but fell 25-18 in the fourth set.
In the final set, it was all Assumption as the team grabbed a quick 8-2 before the Owls battled back to within three, 11-8. However, Assumption ended the final set and match on a 4-2 run.
The Owls are back in action on Fri. Sept. 25 as the team welcome the College of Saint Rose to Pelz Gym for a NE-10 showdown beginning at 6 p.m.
