Women's Basketball Takes On Merrimack and Saint Anselm This Week

The Owls prepare for two road game this week against the Warriors and Hawks.

OWLS CONTINUE NE-10 ACTION
Following a 2-0 week, the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team looks extend its winning streak to four as the Owls hit the road this week with two Northeast-10 Conference games against Merrimack College and Saint Anselm College.

SCOUTING MERRIMACK 
• Merrimack is 2-4 at home and 4-4 on the road thus far.
• Senior guard Tia Scott was named NE-10 Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week after becoming the first player nationwide with multiple
triple-doubles this season, doing so in back-to-back fashion during Merrimack's two-game week.
• A a team, the Warriors are averaging 59.9 points, 403 rebounds, 12.1 assists, 18.1 turnovers, 8.7 steals and 1.7 blocks per contest.
• Caitlin Garger leads the team averaging 16.0 points while shooting 45.2 percent from the floor and 417 from behind the arc. 

ALL-TIME AGAINST MERRIMACK
Southern Connecticut leads Merrimack in the all-time series with a record of 13-7.

LAST SEASON AGAINST MERRIMACK
The women's basketball team was edged by Merrimack College in a Northeast-10 Conference game by the score of 68-64. Danielle Powell led the Owls with 14 points, eight rebounds, two assists, a steal and a team-high four blocks

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
• Saint Anselm is 2-4 at home and 4-4 on the road thus far.
• The Hawks are third in the NE-10 in three-point percentage with 33.3 percent.
• Saint Anselm is also first in the NE-10 in blocks per game (4.9), total rebounds (428) and defensive rebounds (30.3).
• This year the Hawks are shooting 39.1 percent from the floor and 72.1 percent from the free throw line.
• Samnell Vonleh ranks fifth in the NE-10 and leads the team with 7.9 rebounds per game.

ALL-TIME AGAINST SAINT ANSELM
Southern Connecticut leads Saint Anselm in the all-times series with a record of 16-6.

LAST SEASON AGAINST SAINT ANSELM
The women's basketball team defeated Saint Anselm College by the score 67-60. Maria Weselyj  scored a team-high 16 points.

BEATHEA MOVES UP IN SCSU RECORD BOOK
After posting a combined 29 points last week for the Owls, senior Jackie Beathea now ranks  eighth (out of 20) in the all-time points category.

LYNCH CLOSING IN ON 100 WINS
After a 2-0 week, head coach Kate Lynch is only eight games away from reaching her 100th career win as a head coach.

WESELYJ AND BEATHEA NAMED TO NE-10 HONOR ROLL
After helping the Owls to a 2-0 week, Maria Weselyj and Jackie Beathea have earned spots on this week's Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll.

CAREER-HIGHS VS. SAINT MICHAEL'S
In the win against Saint Michael's, the women's basketball ball team had two student-athletes recorded career-highs:
• Junior Maria Weselyj recorded a career-high 24 points.
• Sophomore Paige Decker recorded a career-high five steals.

CAREER-HIGHS VS. STONEHILL
In the win against Stonehill, the women's basketball team had three student-athletes recorded or tied their career-highs:
• Danielle Powell recorded a career-high 20 points.
• Junior Maria Weselyj recorded a career-high five rebounds.
• Sophomore Murhy Murad tied her career-high two steals.

BEATHEA RECORDS 1,000 CAREER REBOUND
On January 2, 2016, Jackie Beathea recorded another major achievement as an Owl as she recorded her 1,000th career rebound at Le Moyne. Following this accomplishment, she now leads SCSU in the all-time records books in rebounding.

OWLS AMONG NCAA LEADERS
According to the NCAA Ranking Summary (1/11):
Jackie Beathea ranks:
• first in rebounds per game with 13.8.
• first in offensive rebounds per game with 7.0.
• first in total rebounds with 220.0.
• eighth in double-double with nine.
Nicole Grossbard ranks:
• eighth in total assists with 87.
• 20th in assists per game with 5.4.

NORTHEAST-10 LEADERS (as of 1/11)
• Jackie Beathea not only leads the team, but leads the conference in rebounds averaging 13.8 a contest.
• Jackie Beathea is seventh in the league averaging 1.2 blocks per contest.
• Maria Weselyj is third in the conference with a three-point shooting percentage of 45.2 percent. 
• Nicole Grossbard is third in the league in assists averaging 5.4 a game as well as fourth in the league in steals averaging 2.2 a game.

BEATHEA SETS NEW SCSU SINGLE GAME-HIGH
In the win against the Eagles, Jackie Beathea set a new SCSU single game-high in rebounds with 22. She posted 10 rebounds in the first half and 12 rebounds in the second half.

NEW ARRIVALS
The Owls welcome four newcomers to the squad for the 2015-16 season – Jana Migliaro, Amanda Pfohl, Allie Smith and Erin Ryder.

WELCOME BACK
Southern Connecticut returns 13 players from last year's squad – seniors Liz McKinley, Jacqueline Deens, Jackie Beathea, Nicole Grossbard and Danielle Powell, juniors Taylor McLaughlin and Maria Weselyj, sophomores Chandler Williams, Abby Hurlbert, Paige Decker Chloe Brinton and Kendra Meredith, red-shirt sophomore Murphy Murad.

LYNCH NOTE
Kate Lynch '08 begins her first full season as head coach for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team. Lynch has compiled a 81-65 overall record as a head coach. Lynch remains the all-time leading scorer in Owls' history (1,779 points) and ranks fifth all-time in rebounds (650).

Southern Connecticut was selected fourth in the Southwest Division according to the Northeast-10 Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.

TRI-CAPTAINS
Senior Jacqueline Deens, Nicole Grossbard and Danielle Powell will serve as team tri-captains for the Owls this winter.

LOOKING BACK ON THE SEASON THAT WAS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team closed the regular season with 14 wins and qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Owls had one student-athlete recognized by the league with year-end honors.

BEATHEA NAMED ALL-NE-10
For the third year in a row, Jackie Beathea earned All-Conference honors after an impressive season as she led the Owls in scoring with 384 points and rebounds with 323. She also recorded 16 double-doubles.

AMONG THE NE-10 LEADERS
Amongst the returners, the Owls had three players finish in the top five of Northeast-10 Conference participants in four categories.
•Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in rebounds per game, pulling down 11.1 per contest.
•Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in offensive rebounds per game, pulling down 5.0 per contest.
•Nicole Grossbard finished No. 2 in assists per game, recording 4.9 per contest.

EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had 11 student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2014-15 academic year.

The Owls return to action on Jan. 20 as the team takes on Southern New Hampshire University at 1:30 p.m.
