NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Led by a pair of double-doubles from senior
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) and junior
Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) as well as a team-high 15-point effort from senior
Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.), the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Southern New Hampshire University by the score of 82-56 in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown at Moore Field House on Wednesday evening.
Following the win, the Owls improve to 13-6 on the season and move to 6-5 in league play. For the visitors, the Penmen fall to 10-7 overall and 4-7 in the Northeast-10.
Beathea recorded her 11th double-double of the season against the Penmen as she tallied 14 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks and two steals while McLaughlin registered her second double-double with 12 points and 12 reounds as well as posted a block, a steal and an assist. Powell registered a team-high 15 points to go along with three rebounds and four assists.Â
In the win, sophomore
Paige Decker (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) recorded a career-high five assists while senior
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) also recorded a team-high five assists.
As a team, the Owls forced 23 Penmen turnovers while scoring 16 points off those caused turnovers. Southern Connecticut finished the evening shooting 44.4 percent from the floor while holding Southern New Hampshire to only 27.6 percent shooting from the field. Â
Over the first eight minutes of play, Southern Connecticut and Southern New Hampshire fought for the lead managing two ties and five lead changes. It wasn't until the 1:01 mark where we saw the Owls go up five, 19-14, thanks to a three from
Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.). It didn't stop there as Decker hit the deep three at the buzzard to give the Owls a six-point lead, 22-16, heading into the second quarter.Â
Coming out of the short break, Southern Connecticut began to capitalize on offense as the Owls opened the quarter with a 11-4 run entering a Penmen timeout at the 5:41 mark. Southern New Hampshire battled back to within 14, 38-24, but would trail 40-24 at the half.
Up 16 at the break, the Owls continued to dominate on offense as a three from
Amanda Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) gave the hosts their biggest lead of the frame with 27, 57-30, with 4:19 left in the third. The visitors chipped away at the Owls' lead before the Penmen found themselves trailing Southern Connecticut 61-39 entering the final quarter.Â
In the fourth quarter, Southern New Hampshire could only play catch-up as the Owls took their biggest lead of the game with 28, 80-52, before securing the 82-56 home victory.
The Owls are back in action on Jan. 23 as the team travels to Rindge, N.H. to take on Franklin Pierce University. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m
