D. Williams Scores 40, Shares Double-Double With Mallory in Owls' Big Win

Desmond Williams set a new career high with 40 points against Assumption on Tuesday.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University defeated Assumption College 96-76 on Tuesday evening at Moore Field House. The Owls held a 20 point second half lead after closing out the first half on a 28-5 run, capped by a Desmond Williams (Torrington, Conn.) buzzer beating 30-foot three-pointer. Williams finished the game with a double-double, his tenth of the year, with a career high 40 points and 14 rebounds. Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) also posted a double-double, his first this season, with 16 points and 11 boards. He also had a game high seven assists.



With the win, Southern Connecticut improves to 16-4 overall and 11-2 in the Northeast-10 while the Greyhounds fall to 6-12 and 2-11 in the conference.

The score was 25-24 Assumption with 7:04 remaining in the first half when Southern took the game into its hands. Mallory started the 28-5 run with a jumper to give the Owls a one point lead. Joey Wallace (Rochester, N.Y.) followed it up with a three-pointer to extend the lead to four. Williams then hit a jumper and a three-pointer, himself, to give Southern an 11 point lead. Williams scored 13 and assisted on five more of the Owls' 28 points during their run. His 30-foot buzzer beater to end the first frame gave him 21 points and nine rebounds at the break on 9-of-12 shooting and 3-of-5 from deep. The Owls held Assumption to 32-percent shooting in the first half – no Greyhounds player scored in double figures.

Southern Connecticut maintained its lead in the second half and did not let Assumption get any closer than within 19 points. The Owls took its biggest lead – 27 points – on a Williams layup with 8:56 remaining in the game. It was the second of three consecutive Williams layups. Southern Connecticut tallied 42 points in the paint in the game and outrebounded Assumption 49-27. The 49 rebounds were tied for the third most by the Owls all year and the 27 rebounds allowed were the second fewest by an Owl opponent this year.



Southern Connecticut shot 56-percent (41-of-73) in the game, its best shooting percentage all season. It also shot 40-percent from three-point range with Williams leading the way going 4-of-7. Austin Carter (Bloomfield, Conn.) pitched in with nine points, three rebounds and five blocks. As a team, the Owls blocked 12 Assumption shots, the second most all year, and notched 25 assists, tied for the second most all year. Wallace had a solid all-around game with five points, six assists and four rebounds. Isaiah McLeod (Cambridge, Mass.) added 10 points, three rebounds and two assists. He finished as the Owls' third leading scorer.

Southern Connecticut returns to action this Saturday when it travels to Bentley to take on the conference leading Falcons at 3:30 p.m.
