So. Conn. St. 56 WALTHAM, Mass. – Despite four double-digit scorers, including a double-double from senior forward
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.), the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team came up short on Saturday afternoon, 60-56, against Bentley University in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown. With the loss, the Owls fall to 14-8 on the season and 7-7 in the Southwest Division while the Falcons improve to 17-3 and 11-3 in the Northeast Division.
Beathea led the Owls' offense with her 14th double-double of the year with 14 points and 14 rebounds as well as chipped in with a team-high three blocks, an assist and a steal. Junior
Taylor McLaughlin registered 13 points and six rebounds.

Danielle Powell (Middletown N.Y.) finished the afternoon with 12 points, six rebounds, a block, a steal and an assist while junior
Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) rounded out the quartet of double-digit scorers with 10 points, a rebound, three steals and an assist.
Southern Connecticut opened the game with an 11-2 run before extending its lead back up to nine, 13-4, after a good jumper from McLaughlin at the 2:32 mark. Southern Connecticut would remain ahead of Bentley as the Owls held a 15-7 lead heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter began with the Owls extending their lead to double-digits, 17-7, but shortly after a 5-2 run by the Falcons brought the score to within seven, 19-12, with 6:48 remaining. The Falcons' threat didn't worry the Owls as a 5-2 run gave the visitors a 12-point lead, 26-14. However, Bentley would close out the period with a 8-2 run to bring the score to within one, 28-27, in favor of Southern Connecticut.
Bentley remained in control of the game as the hosts took a four-point lead, 34-30, over the Owls to start off the third quarter. Weselyj managed to tie the game at 34-all after a made layup, but Bentley answered right back with a 41-36 lead with 1:05 left in the period. Southern Connecticut ended the period with a 4-1 run, but remained trailing Bentley 42-40.
Down by two, Southern Connecticut battled back to within one, 45-44, before regaining a three-point lead, 52-49, with 4:25 left to play. The Owls maintained a three-point lead until the 52 second mark as Bentley took over on offense and led for the remainder of the frame.
The Owls are back in action on Feb. 6th against Adelphi.
