Women's Basketball Prepares for Saint Michael's and Stonehill College This Week

The Owls open week eight with a home game against the Purple Knights.

OWLS HOST TWO NE-10 MATCHES THIS WEEK
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball returns to Moore Field House this week as the Owls host Northeast-10 Conference rivals Saint Michael's College and Stonehill College.

SCOUTING SAINT MICHAEL'S
• The Purple Knights enter Wednesday's game with a record of 5-6 and 2-5. 
• Saint Michael's is currently on a two-game winning streak as the team recently defeated Daemen, 75-58, and Southern New Hampshire, 71-59.
• Makezie Burud ranks second in the league averaging 11.0 rebounds per game.
• Indira Evora ranks third in the league shooting 44.4 percent from three-point range.
• As a team, the Purple Knights are fourth in the league in points per game (6.5), three-point percentage (33.7%) and free throw percentage (74.2%).

ALL-TIME AGAINST SAINT MICHAEL'S
Southern Connecticut leads the all-time series against Saint Michael's College 17-8.

LAST SEASON AGAINST SAINT MICHAEL'S
In the one meeting, Southern Connecticut lost to Saint Michael's by the score of 74-73. The Owls tied the score at 73-73, but Indira Evora secured the win for the Purple Knights with a good free throw with 13 seconds left on the clock.

SCOUTING STONEHILL
• As of 1/4, Stonehill has a record of 8-5 and 3-4 on the year, but before playing the Owls the Skyhawks will face Le Moyne College.
• Stonehill is coming off a 80-69 loss to Bentley University on Saturday.
•Maty Diabate and Paige Marshall are ranked within the top five in the league in field goal percentage with 53.2 percent and 51.5 percent, respectively.
• Kelly Martin leads the Skyhawks as well as ranks fifth in the conference in points per game with 14.8.

ALL-TIME AGAINST STONEHILL
Stonehill leads the all-time series against Southern Connecticut with a record of 13-11.

LAST SEASON AGAINST STONEHILL
Last season, Southern Connecticut lost to Stonehill College in overtime by the score of 82-74. Southern Conn. was up in the final couple of minutes, but the Skyhawks battled back to tie the game at 70-70.

LOOKING BACK AT WEEK SEVEN
Southern Connecticut wrapped up week seven with a 1-1 record. The Owls opened the week with a non-conference victory against Georgian Court, 79-59. However, the Owls ended the week with a 48-37 loss at Le Moyne on Saturday afternoon.

BEATHEA RECORDS 1,000TH CAREER REBOUND
On January 2, 2016, Jackie Beathea recorded another major achievement as an Owl as she recorded her 1,000th career rebound at Le Moyne.

BEATHEA NAMED TO NE-10 HONOR ROLL
Beathea averaged 11.5 points, 19.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 2.5 blocks per game in a 1-1 week for Southern Connecticut. In a win against Georgian Court, she registered her seventh double-double of the year of 19 points and 17 rebounds along with two blocks and three steals. Beathea wrapped up the week by recording her 1,000th career total rebound as an Owl in a loss at Le Moyne, as she picked up four points, a season-high three blocks and a team-high 21 rebounds, just one shy of tying her career-high and the school record.

CAREER-HIGHS VS. GEORGIAN COURT
In the win against Georgian Court, the women's basketball team had four student-athletes tie their career-highs:
• Senior Nicole Grossbard tied her career-high nine assists.
• Senior Danielle Powell tied her career-high 17 points.
• Sophomore Murphy Murad tied her career-high five assists.

CAREER-HIGHS AT LE MOYNE
In the loss at Le Moyne, the women's basketball team had fur student-athlete set new career-highs:
• Sophomore Paige Decker recorded a career-high two blocks.
• Freshman Amanda Pfohl recorded a career-high 10 points.
• Sophomore Murphy Murad recorded a career-high one block.
• Senior Liz McKinley recorded a career-high three rebound and an assist.

BEATHEA RECORDS SEVENTH DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Senior Jackie Beathea tallied her seventh double-double of the season against Georgian Court with 17 rebounds and 19 points. 

OWLS AMONG NCAA LEADERS
According to the NCAA Ranking Summary (1/4):
Jackie Beathea ranks:
• first in rebounds per game with 13.6..
• first in offensive rebounds per game with 7.0.
• first in total rebounds with 190.0.
• 10th in double-double with seven.
Nicole Grossbard ranks:
• 14th in total assists with 73.
• 26th in assists per game with 5.2.

NORTHEAST-10 LEADERS (as of 1/4)
Jackie Beathea not only leads the team, but leads the conference in rebounds averaging 13.6 a contest.
Jackie Beathea is seventh in the league averaging 1.2 blocks per contest.
Maria Weselyj is fourth in the conference with a three-point shooting percentage of 42.4 percent. 
Nicole Grossbard is third in the league in assists averaging 5.2 a game as well as fifth in the league in steals averaging 2.1 a game.
Danielle Powell is eighth in the conference averaging 1.1 blocks per game.

BEATHEA SETS NEW SCSU SINGLE GAME-HIGH
In the win against the Eagles, Jackie Beathea set a new SCSU single game-high in rebounds with 22. She posted 10 rebounds in the first half and 12 rebounds in the second half.

NEW ARRIVALS
The Owls welcome four newcomers to the squad for the 2015-16 season – Jana Migliaro, Amanda Pfohl, Allie Smith and Erin Ryder.

WELCOME BACK
Southern Connecticut returns 13 players from last year's squad – seniors Liz McKinley, Jacqueline Deens, Jackie Beathea, Nicole Grossbard and Danielle Powell, juniors Taylor McLaughlin and Maria Weselyj, sophomores Chandler Williams, Abby Hurlbert, Paige Decker Chloe Brinton and Kendra Meredith, red-shirt sophomore Murphy Murad.

LYNCH NOTE
Kate Lynch '08 begins her first full season as head coach for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team. Lynch has compiled a 81-65 overall record as a head coach. Lynch remains the all-time leading scorer in Owls' history (1,779 points) and ranks fifth all-time in rebounds (650).

Southern Connecticut was selected fourth in the Southwest Division according to the Northeast-10 Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.

TRI-CAPTAINS
Senior Jacqueline Deens, Nicole Grossbard and Danielle Powell will serve as team tri-captains for the Owls this winter.

LOOKING BACK ON THE SEASON THAT WAS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team closed the regular season with 14 wins and qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Owls had one student-athlete recognized by the league with year-end honors.

BEATHEA NAMED ALL-NE-10
For the third year in a row, Jackie Beathea earned All-Conference honors after an impressive season as she led the Owls in scoring with 384 points and rebounds with 323. She also recorded 16 double-doubles.

AMONG THE NE-10 LEADERS
Amongst the returners, the Owls had three players finish in the top five of Northeast-10 Conference participants in four categories.
Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in rebounds per game, pulling down 11.1 per contest.
Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in offensive rebounds per game, pulling down 5.0 per contest.
Nicole Grossbard finished No. 2 in assists per game, recording 4.9 per contest.
Danielle Powell finished No. 2 in blocks per game, tallying 2.0 per contest.

EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had 11 student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2014-15 academic year.

UP NEXT
The Owls return to action on Jan. 12 as the team heads north to take on Merrimack College. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Bert Hammel Court.
