Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) had a stellar afternoon scoring a career-high 20 points along with senior
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) who recorded a double-double, 16 points and 15 rebounds, as the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Stonehill College by the score of 72-69 on Saturday afternoon at Moore Field House.
Following the win, the Owls extend their winning streak to two games and improve to 11-5 and 4-4 on the year while Stonehill extends its losing streak to three games and falls to 8-7 and 3-6 overall.
Powell finished today with a career-high 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field as well as went 6-of-9 from the charity stripe. She also chipped in with three rebounds, two assists and a block for the Owls. Beathea picked up her ninth double-double of the season following today's win and chipped in with two steals, two blocks and an assist. Junior
Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) registered a career-high five rebounds while tallying 13 points.
Southern Connecticut opened the game with a 4-0 run before a layup from Powell extended the hosts' lead to four, 8-4, at the 6:56 mark. Shortly after, Stonehill managed a short spurt to give the team its first lead of the game, 9-8. Both teams traded leads and tied the game at 11-11 before a layup from Powell tied the game at 13-13 to close out the first.
The Owls controlled the first period in the paint, 12-8, but Stonehill managed to score six of its 13 points off five Owls' turnovers.
The second period was all Stonehill as the Skyhawks outscored the Owls 18-11 to take a 31-24 lead at the half. Stonehill opened the frame with a six-point lead, 19-13, before the Owls battled back to within two, 20-18, following a layup from Powell with 6:41 to go before the half. Southern Connecticut kept the Skyhawks' lead to within four, but a three from Kelly Martin gave the visitors a seven-point lead, 29-22. Within the final minute, the Owls answered back to within five, 29-24, after two made free throws from
Erin Ryder (Congers, N.Y.). However, a layup from Kelly Martin put the visitors back up to seven, 31-24, heading into the locker rooms.
Stonehill continued to lead the game and extended its lead to nine, 37-28, to start off the third quarter, but an 11-3 run by Southern Connecticut brought the score to within one, 40-39, with 4:09 to go in the frame. Up by four, 43-39, Stonehill relinquished its lead to Southern Connecticut, 44-43, after a 5-3 run by the hosts, but Stonehill will hold the 47-46 lead heading into the final period.
Southern Connecticut remained dominate in the paint scoring 10 of their 22 points in the blue as well as tallied 11 points off the bench.
In the final period of the game, Stonehill was unable to keep its lead as the Owls led from the 9:28 mark till the final buzzard. At the 8:30 mark, Stonehill brought the score to within one, 53-52, but the Owls pushed their lead back up to five, 57-52, after two free throws from Weselyj. With the clock winding down, Stonehill threatened the Owls again at the 2:37 mark after a three from Paige Marshall, but the Owls would go on to win it by three, 72-69.
The Owls are back in action on Tuesday afternoon at Merrimack College.
