WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Despite career-best performances from junior quarterback
Raymond Catapano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and redshirt sophomore tailback
Vochan Fowler (Bridgeport, Conn.), the Southern Connecticut State University football team lost to the University of New Haven today, 38-20, for the Elm City Trophy.
TEAM RECORDS: SCSU 2-3 (2-2 Northeast-10 Conference) | UNH 3-2 (3-1 NE-10)
Fowler had 103 yards on 16 carries for the Owls, while Catapano set new career-highs with 22 completions, 46 attempts and 264 passing yards. He also rushed six times for 40 yards and had one touchdown on the ground and two more in the air.
Devante Jenkins (Carson, Calif.) had seven catches for 95 yards and a touchdown to lead the receivers.
CHARGERS START QUICK: UNH scored the first 14 points of the game on consecutive drives midway through the first quarter. Both drives culminated in Ajee Patterson touchdown passes – the first to Ty Headen, the second to Jonathan Badyna.
OWLS KEEP IT CLOSE: Catapano closed a 10-play, 75-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown pass to
Shaquan Hall (Newark, N.J.).
Mike McNally (Bristol, Conn.) added the PAT to make it 14-7 in the final minute of the opening frame.
Another Patterson touchdown toss late in the second quarter made it 21-7, but SCSU answered with a nine-play, 71-yard drive that was capped with a four-yard touchdown scramble by Catapano with four seconds left in the half. UNH led 21-14 at halftime.
WITHIN STRIKING DISTANCE: Each team scored a touchdown in the third quarter. Andre Anderson found the end zone from six yards out to restore the 14-point lead early in the frame. The Owls answered with a 13-play, 75-yard drive, concluded by an 8-yard pass from Catapano to Jenkins. The PAT was blocked, and UNH led 28-20 after 45 minutes.
CLOSING IT OUT: UNH scored all 10 points of the fourth quarter for a 38-20 final.
