LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team swept non-conference foes Caldwell University and Georgian Court University on Saturday afternoon as part of a tri-match hosted by Georgian Court. The Owls edged past the Cougars, 3-1, before defeating the Lions in three-straight sets, 3-0.
Match 1: So. Conn. St. 3, Caldwell 1
Set Scores: 25-15 (SCS), 25-20 (SCS), 25-17 (CDU) and 25-22 (SCS)
Records: So. Conn. St. (9-7) | Caldwell (10-8)
IT WAS ALL SOUTHERN:
Southern Connecticut ended set one quickly defeating the Courgars, 25-15.
OWLS CONTROLLED THE THREAT:
Set two saw Southern Connecticut and Caldwell fight for lead, but the Owls conquered the set, 25-20.
COUGARS FORCE FOURTH SET:
Behind a .256 hitting percentage, Caldwell was able to force a fourth set as the Cougars upset the Owls, 25-17.
OWLS IMPROVE TO 9-7:
Caldwell found themselves within inches of the Southern Connecticut, but a solid finish for the Owls secured the 3-1 win in match one.
STAT BREAKDOWN:
- Sophomore Leanna Jadus (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded a team-high eight kills while redshirt junior Nicole Hauser (Stevens Point, Wisc.), junior Alexandria Jurgens (Cornwall, N.Y.) and freshman Killian Chambers (Shelby Township, Mich.) collected six kills a piece.
- Jurgens led the Owls in service aces with four and assists with 16.
- Senior Faith Ford (New Britain, Conn.) was a strong impact for the Owls as the outside hitter registered a team-high six blocks.
Match 2: So. Conn. St. 3, Georgian Court 0
Set Scores: 25-9 (SCS), 25-23 (SCS) and 25-22 (SCS)
Records: So. Conn. St. (10-7) | Georgian Court (8-11)
DOMINATE FIRST SET:
Southern Connecticut dominated set one as the Owls went up 1-0 after winning by 16, 25-9.
SO CLOSE:
Georgian Court saw its lead grow smaller and smaller as a well balanced attack from the Owls secured the 25-23 second set win.
ITS ALL OVER:
Similar to set two, Caldwell and Southern Connecticut kept exchanging the momentum of the game, but Southern Connecticut took the final set and match, 25-22.
STAT BREAKDOWN:
- Freshman Gabriela Vazquez (Meriden, Conn.) was just shy of recording her third double-double of the season as the rookie tallied 12 kills, five digs, a block and an assist.
- Jurgens collected a team-high 12 assists while Nimz added 10, respectively.
- Southern Connecticut led Georgian Court in points (51), kills (33), aces (12), blocks (nine) and assists (25).

Southern Connecticut returns to action on October 4th as the Owls tackle Merrimack College. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in North Andover, Mass.
