Strong Second Half Pushes Owls Past Pace, 35-16

The Owls defeated Pace today, 35-16.

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University football team scored the final 20 points of the game en route to a 35-16 victory over Pace in Northeast-10 Conference play today.

TEAM RECORDS: SCSU 3-3 (3-2 Northeast-10) | Pace 0-6 (0-5 NE-10)

Junior quarterback Raymond Catapano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) completed 13-of-21 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown, and also rushed 16 times for 59 yards and another score. Running back Vochan Fowler (Bridgeport, Conn.) broke the century mark for the second straight game with 138 yards on 26 carries and also returned an interception 26 yards for a score on a botched Pace fake punt attempt.

TURNING POINT: Pace took the second half kickoff and went 75 yards in 15 plays to take a 16-15 lead over the Owls. Southern answered with a 16-play, 75 yard drive of its own that culminated on a 16-yard pass from Catapano to Devante Jenkins (Carson, Calif.). The Owls went for two points and failed to convert, making the score 21-16.

Pace then attempted a fake punt on fourth down on the ensuing drive, but Fowler came away with the interception and went 26 yards for a touchdown. Catapano then found Mark Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) on the two point conversion for a 29-16 lead.

Eli Parks (Bristol, Conn.) capped the scoring by running for an 18-yard fourth quarter touchdown, accounting for part of his 71 yards in the game.

A QUIET FIRST QUARTER: Neither team scored the opening frame. Pace finally broke through with 8:22 left in the second on a 30-yard field goal from Pat Davis.

BACK AND FORTH BEFORE THE HALF: Catapano put the finishing touches on an 84-yard scoring drive with a three-yard touchdown run with 3:36 before the half. Mike McNally (Bristol, Conn.) added the PAT for a 7-3 lead.

Pace needed just two plays on its next drive to take the lead back, a 73-yard pass from Jason Habash to Tyler Mason. However, the PAT was blocked to keep the game at 9-7.

Southern answered by marching 75 yards in 2:12 before intermission. Robert Nittolo (Hillsborough, N.J.) entered the game and connected with Thomas on a 17-yard pass to Thomas for a 13-9 lead. Catapano then reentered and hit Ryne Grisenauer (Nauagatuck, Conn.) on the two-point try for a 15-9 halftime edge.
