BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Behind a double-double performance from senior Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) as well as a career-high from senior Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.), the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team topped non-conference opponent the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon by the score of 90-55. Following today win, the Owls pick up their first win of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Following two ties by UDC, Southern Connecticut slowly began gaining momentum as the Owls pushed their lead to double-digits, 22-10, entering the second quarter.
 
The Firebirds continued to chop away at the Owls lead and managed battled back to within nine, 25-16, at the 4:31 mark, following a jumper from Kaiya Coleman. However, Southern Connecticut ended the half with a 10-0 run, 35-16.

The second half was all Southern Connecticut as the Owls outscored the District of Columbia 55-39 en route to a 90-55 non-conference win. 

FIRST HALF BREAKDOWN
  • The Owls dominated on the boards in the first half holding a 27-14 edge over the Firebirds.
  • Senior Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) led the Owls scoring 12 points of their 35 points.
  • Freshman Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) took charge on offense assisting six of the Owls 13 baskets.
 
SECOND HALF BREAKDOWN
  • Weselyj had a better second half as the senior tri-captain totaled 18 points on 4-of-6 shooting from behind the arc.
  • Southern Connecticut shot well in the second half compared to the first shooting 57.1 percent from the floor and 53.8 percent from long range.

STAT BREAKDOWN
  • McLaughlin recorded her fourth straight double-double of the season, 14 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Weselyj tied her career-high for the second time in her career with 24 points.
  • Wheeler also set a career-high in assists with eight.
  • For Southern Connecticut, 13 different players registered a point as well as a rebound.
