Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.), the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team earned its first Northeast-10 Conference win after defeating cross-town rival New Haven by a score of 79-54.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite trailing New Haven by two, 2-0, in the opening 15 seconds, Southern Connecticut's offense clicked as the Owls rattled off six straight three's to push their lead to double-digits. New Haven could only play catch-up in the first half as the visitors would trailed by 16, 42-26, heading into halftime.
At the 8:39 mark, in the third, New Haven cut the Owls' lead to within 15, 43-28, but Southern Connecticut's lead would remain above 19 for the remainder of regulation.
Southern Connecticut's largest lead of the game was 28 after
Murphy Murad (Storrs, Conn.) hit a deep three with 1:39 remaining in regulation, following a nice pass from
Amanda Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.).
FIRST HALF STATS
- McLaughlin scored 17 of her 32 points in the first half. She went 6-for-8 from the field and 2-for-2 from behind the arc.
- The Owls' offense was on point in the first half shooting 45.5 percent from the field, 53.8 percent from long range and 100 percent from the charity strip.
- Southern Connecticut's longest lead in the first half was 16 points both at the 1:55 mark, 38-22, and 36 second mark, 42-26.
SECOND HALF STATS
- Seven different Owls scored at least two points in the second half while McLaughlin netted a team-high 15.
- McLaughlin also collected four of her seven steals in the second.
- New Haven out-rebounded the Owls in the second 19-18.
FINAL STAT BREAKDOWN
- McLaughlin was just three steals shy of collecting her first career triple-double as the senior tallied seven steals, a block, an assists, 12 rebounds and 32 points. She also collected her fifth double-double of the season.
- Both Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) and Chandler Williams (Chepachet, R.I.) registered 11 points, rounding out the Owls' double-digit scorers.
- Red-shirt junior Murphy Murad (Storrs, Conn.) was just shy of collecting her first career double-double as she posted a career-high 10 assists, nine points and five rebounds.
