NEW HAVEN, Conn. – In a game in which it never trailed, the Southern Connecticut State University football team secured a winning 2016 campaign with a 28-25 victory over St. Anselm on Senior Day.
TEAM RECORDS: SCSU 6-4 (6-3 Northeast-10) | St. Anselm 2-8 (2-7 NE-10)
The Owls honored their 14 seniors prior to the game with the Hawks, and then went out on the field and claimed their third consecutive victory.
Junior quarterback
Raymond Catapano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) completed 13-of-23 passes for 235 yards and a career-high four passing touchdowns. Running back
Vochan Fowler (Bridgeport, Conn.) closed with 98 yards on 18 carries. Tight end
Ryne Griesenauer (Naugatuck, Conn.) had three catches for 56 yards, two of which were touchdown receptions.
Kayjuan Bynum (Springfield, Mass.) had a team-high 11 tackles.
CHAFFEE SEALS IT LATE: The Owls led by scores of 14-0, 21-3 and 28-10. However, St. Anselm scored the final 15 points of the game and recovered an onside kick in the closing minutes. The Hawks were in Owls' territory driving for the winning score when
Corey Chaffee (Danbury, Conn.) intercepted a pass and returned it to the Hawks' 3 with 2:01 left. SCSU ran out the clock from there for the win.
OUT TO THE RACES: SCSU took the opening kickoff and needed just 97 seconds to go 75 yards in four plays. Catapano found
Devante Jenkins (Carson, Calif.) on a 39-yard touchdown pass to put the Owls up 7-0 after a PAT from
Joe Rice (Union Beach, N.J.).
Vasilios Grigorakos (Port Washington, N.Y.) intercepted a Hawks' pass later in the quarter and, four plays later, Catapano's 4-yard shovel pass to Grisenauer padded the lead to 14-0.
ONE MORE TIME: The Hawks got on the board with 46 seconds left in the first quarter. However, Catapano hit Griesenauer on a 9-yard touchdown pass early in the second frame to extend the lead to 21-3 at the half.
STILL IN HAND: A St. Anselm punt return touchdown late in the third quarter closed Southern's lead to 21-10. It wasn't long before the Owls restored the 18-point advantage, though, as Catapano tossed a touchdown pass to
Earl Myers (Uniondale, N.Y.) only 10 seconds into the fourth quarter.
OTHER NOTABLES:
- For Griesenauer, it was the first multiple touchdown game as a collegian.
- Myers' touchdown reception was also his first as a collegian.
- Jenkins moved into fourth place at SCSU in career touchdown receptions (24), tying former Owl and Cleveland Brown Travis Tucker. He's now ninth in career receptions (112).
- In addition to the interceptions from Grigorakos and Chaffee,
Gavin Harley (New Rochelle, N.Y.) had a pick as well.
- Southern totaled five sacks on the day.
