No. 4 Nationally Ranked Men's Basketball Begins Season In Bridgeport Tournament

The Owls kick off the 2016-17 season with two games in the Bridgeport Tournament.

The No. 4 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team will open the 2016-17 regular season with two games in the Bridgeport Tournament. The Owls take on Holy Family University in game one on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 8 p.m., followed by the University of Bridgeport in game two on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m.

ALL-TIME VS. HOLY FAMILY UNIVERSITY
Both teams squared for the first time ever last season, where the Panthers defeated the Owls, 90-70.
The Last Meeting  - Holy Family 90, SCSU 70 - Sophomore Joey Wallace (Rochester. N.Y.) led the way for the Owls, as he scored 13 points along with six rebounds and four assists.

SCOUTING HOLY FAMILY UNIVERSITY
The Panthers finished the 2016-17 season with a program best 26-6 record. They became the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference team to receive a number one seed to the NCAA Tournament where they hosted the East Region. The Panthers season came to an end after an 88-80 loss to Southern New Hampshire in the NCAA East Regional Quarterfinals. Holy Family has appeared in the NCAA Tournament twice in school history - 2008 and 2015. The top two scorers from last season - Reggie Charles (16.7 ppg) and Marvin Crawford (14.6 ppg) are no longer on the team. The Panthers welcome 10 freshman aboard this year.

ALL-TIME VS. BRIDGEPORT
Bridgeport leads the all-time series with a record of 54-40. SCSU won the first of two meetings last season, 104-96 in the Bridgeport Tournament. In its second meeting, the Purple Knights defeated the Owls, 87-80. SCSU has played Bridgeport more than any other opponent in school history.
Game 1: SCSU 104, Bridgeport 96 - Senior Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) scored a team-high 20 points along with seven rebounds and four assists. 
Game 2: Bridgeport 87, SCSU 80 - Senior Austin Carter (Bloomfield, Conn.) scored a team high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 4-of-7 three-point range.

SCOUTING BRIDGEPORT
The Purple Knights finished fifth in the East Coast Conference with a record of 15-14. Bridgeport's season came to an end after a 73-68 overtime loss to LIU Post in the ECC Quarterfinals. The Purple Knights placed fifth in both points per game (79.7) and allowed (80.1). Bridgeport has been selected third in this year's ECC preseason poll. The Purple Knights will head into the 2016-17 season without its top four scorers from last year in Muhammed Ahmed (14.7 ppg), Devon Elliot (14.4 ppg), Ernest Rouse (12.7 ppg) and Eddie Asamoah (12.5 ppg).

EXHIBITION OPENER AGAINST NO. 16 UCONN
Junior Jerry Luckett, Jr. flourished in his Owls debut, scoring a team-high 17 points on 7-for-16 shooting in 21 minutes. Mallory finished the game with 14 points, six assists, three rebounds and two blocks in 35 minutes.Carter recorded 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. The Owls controlled the offensive boards, 16-6.

RECAPPING LAST YEAR
The Owls are coming off a year in which they went 22-8, finished first in the NE-10 Conference Southwest Division and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year. The Owls elevated as high as No. 2 in the national rankings last season.

A FINE FIRST SEASON
Owls' coach Scott Burrell was selected the 2016 ECAC Coach of the Year after leading the Owls to 22 wins and a NCAA berth in his first season. 

RETURNING STARTERS
Southern Connecticut will be led by senior Michael Mallory, who led the team with 23 points per game and was selected as an All-American, All-ECAC, All-Region and All-Northeast-10 Conference performer. Classmate Austin Carter averaged 9.8 points per game, 7.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks and was named 2015-16 Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Sophomore Joey Wallace averaged 7.7 points per game and 4.2 rebounds and was named to the NE-10 All-Rookie Team. 

MALLORY CHOSEN TO PRESEASON "SUPER 16" TEAM
Michael Mallory has been selected to the Division II Bulletin's preseason "Super 16" Team. 

MALLORY NAMED SPORTING NEWS PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN
For the second year in a row, Michael Mallory was named to the Sporting News preseason All-America Team. 

SOME RECORDS OWNED, MORE WITHIN REACH
Michael Mallory set a new SCSU single-season program record with 95 three-pointers made last year and is also currently the Owls' all-time leader in three-pointers made with 260 and three-point attempts with 670. He also holds Southern's single-game scoring record with 47 points in a January, 2016 win over Bentley.
• Mallory enters the 2016-17 season with 1,795 points, which is sixth all-time. He's 142 points behind Rich Radicioni (1936), who set the record in 1990. 

CARTER DOES IT DEFENSIVELY
Austin Carter enters his senior season ranked third all-time at SCSU with 168 blocked shots. He's also 15th all-time in career rebounds with 511 boards. The senior earned the 2015 Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year Award.

HEAD OF THE PACK
Seniors Michael Mallory and Austin Carter will serve as team captains for the 2016-17 season. 

WELCOME TO THE CLUB
The Owls welcome junior Jerry Luckett, Jr. sophomore Bernard Brantley and freshmen Noah MireeDonte Etheridge and Taurus Adams II to the team this year.

TOUGH PLACE TO PLAY
Moore Field House has been a tough place to play for the Owls who are 37-8 (.822) at home since the start of the 2013-14 season. SCSU has been even better in NE-10 action with a 28-2 mark (.933) in league games.

FACING SOME TOUGH COMPETITION
The Owls will face five teams that reached the NCAA Division II Tournament a year ago – Bentley, Holy Family, Southern New Hampshire, Stonehill and Saint Anselm.

RECENT SEASON-OPENING SUCCESS
The Owls have been victorious in their last six season-opening games dating back to the 2010-11 season, defeating Molloy, Goldey Beacom, Post, Chestnut Hill, Dominican and Dowling.

THRIVING IN THE CLASSROOM
For the second year in a row, the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team was recognized by the National Association of Basketball Coaches as a recipient of the 2015-16 Team Academic Excellence Award for its success in the classroom. In addition, five members of the team were selected as honorees for the 2016 NABC Honors Court - Michael BozzutoAustin CarterMichael MalloryJonathan Paul and Lucas Van Nes.
