ALBANY, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team came up short on the road to Southwest Division rival the College of Saint Rose, 73-66, on Saturday afternoon at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Over the first 17 minutes of play, Southern Connecticut kept within five points of Saint Rose until the 3:32 mark, in the second, as the Golden Knights pushed their lead to double-digits, 33-23, following a three from Taylor Nazon. The Owls closed out the half with a 10-5 run to bring the score to within five, 38-33, heading into the locker room.
Southern Connecticut managed to keep the Golden Knights' lead to within single digits, but a jumper from Leah Dollard gave the hosts its largest lead of the game, 56-41. Southern Connecticut continued to chop away at the Golden Knights' lead, but came up short 73-66.
SIDE NOTES
- Senior Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) scored 15 of her 26 points in the first half while going 4-for-4 from the line.
- Freshman Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) scored 10 of her 13 points in the second half.
- Southern Connecticut tied the game at three different times throughout the 40 minute, but Saint Rose would take its largest lead of the game with 15 at the 1:11 mark in the third.
FINAL STATS
- Senior Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) recorded a team-high 26 points while shooting 45 percent from the floor as well as collected seven rebounds, two assists and a block.
- McLaughlin shot all of the Owls free throws and finish 6-for-7 at the line.
- Freshman Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) tied her career high 13 points while junior Abby Hurlbert (Thomaston, Conn.) also tied her career-high three assists.
