Owls Fall on the Road to Pace, 52-49

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team came up short on Wednesday evening against Southwest Division foe Pace University, 52-49.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Southern Connecticut took control in the first as a three from Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) gave the Owls their largest lead of the half, 11-7, with 2:55 remaining.
 
The Owls saw the Setters' lead grow to seven, 22-15, following a three from Stefanie Svoboda. Senior Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) brought the Owls' to within five, 22-17, but Southern would trail 27-19 at the half.
 
It was an evenly matched third quarter as Southern Connecticut outscored the Setters, 9-8, and battled back to within seven, 29-22, following a made basket from Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) at the 4:05 mark.
 
Despite trailing the Setters by seven, 35-28, the Owls rallied back to within four, 52-48, following a three from McLaughlin with 1:20 left to play. In the final 30 seconds, Murphy Murad (Storrs, Conn.) brought the score to within three,52-49, after a made free throw, but it wasn't enough as the Owls fall to 1-4 in the Southwest Division.
 
FIRST HALF NOTES
  • Senior Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) led the Owls in the first half with eight points and five rebounds.
  • The Owls held a 4-2 edge over the Setters both in steals and fast-break points.
  • Southern Connecticut was out-rebounded 28-13.
 
SECOND HALF NOTES
  • McLaughlin scored 18 of her 26 points in the second half while shooting 11-of-28 from the floor.
  • Murphy Murad (Storrs, Conn.) and Paige Decker (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) played all of the second half for the Owls.
 
FINAL STATS
  • Southern Connecticut scored 17 of its 30 points off turnovers by Pace.
  • McLaughlin recorded her sixth double-double of the season, 26 points and 11 rebounds.
UP NEXT
Southern Connecticut returns to action on Dec. 10th as the Owls host Le Moyne College.
