A Trio of Double-Digit Scorers Leads Owls Past New Haven 69-52

Northeast-10 Conference Postseason Outlook:
The top five teams in the Southwest Division advance to the 2015-16 Northeast-10 Conference Championship. Southern Connecticut currently is holding the fourth seed with a record of 9-9. American International sits at first seed while Le Moyne and Adelphi claim the second and third seed, respectively. The Owls still have two games remaining and will play Le Moyne on Saturday and Pace next week.
 
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Led by three double-digit performances from senior Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.), junior Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) and senior Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.), the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team split the series with cross-town rival New Haven on Wednesday afternoon at Moore Field House by the score of 69-52. With the win, the Owls improve to 16-10 and 9-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference while the Chargers fall to 12-12 and 8-10.

Beathea recorded her career-high 17th double-double with a team-high 16 points and 18 rebounds to go along with an assist, a block and a steal over 38 minutes of play. Powell registered 14 points on 6-of-15 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 shooting from the line as well as chipped in with five rebounds, three assists and two blocks. McLaughlin registered a season-high five assists while collecting 12 points, three rebounds and a block for the Owls.

Southern Connecticut finished the evening shooting 39.7 percent from the floor and 50.0 percent from three-point range while holding the Chargers to 35.5 percent shooting from the field and 33.3 percent shooting from behind the arc.

It was all Southern Connecticut in the first as the owls outscored the Chargers in the paint 10-6 as well as recorded four second chance points. The Owls opened the game with a five-point, 14-9, lead over New Haven seven minutes in, following a deep three from Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.). Just 18 seconds later, Briana Bradford brought the visitors to within two, 14-12, but the Owls answered back with a 6-1 run to extend their lead to seven, 20-13. New Haven closed out the quarter with three straight points to cut the lead to within four, 20-16.

The Owls came out of the short break with fire in their eyes as the hosts opened the second quarter with  7-2 run to take a nine-point, 27-18, lead, after a layup from Beathea at the 7:07
mark. New Haven managed to cut the Owls lead to four, 32-28, but Southern Connecticut would lead by seven, 37-30, at the half.

Southern Connecticut didn't stop there as a jumper from McLaughlin gave the Owls their biggest lead, thus far, with 11, 43-32, with 7:53 to play. New Haven battled back to within six, 49-43, but Southern Connecticut would take a 10-point, 55-45, lead heading into the final quarter.

New Haven could only play catch-up in the final frame as the visitors saw the hosts lead grow to 18, 69-51, before Southern Connecticut claimed the 69-52 home victory.



The Owls are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 20 as the team welcomes Le Moyne College to Moore Field House on Senior Day.
