NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team trailed by as many as 19 in the final period with 8:55 remaining and made a late run to cut the lead to three, 78-75, but ran out of time and fell to Adelphi University,82-78, at home in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown on Saturday afternoon.
Following the loss, the Owls fall to 14-9 and 7-8 on the season while the Panthers finish the week with a 2-0 record and improve to 16-8 and 9-7.
Senior 
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) led the Owls with her 14th double-double as she recorded a season-high 23 points, 12 rebounds, two assists and a block. Junior 
Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) also recorded a season-high 21 points, just one point shy of tying her career-high 22 points. She also chipped in with five rebounds, two steals, three assists and a block. Senior 
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) rounded out the trio of double-digit scorers with 11 points, four rebounds, seven assists and two steals.
Freshman 
Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) had a career-game as she recorded a career-high in points, rebounds and in assists. She posted eight points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Both teams came out firing on all cylinders forcing four lead changes over the first four minutes of play. Southern Connecticut took the early 4-2 lead before Adelphi secured an eight-point lead, 16-8, following a 14-4 Panthers' run. With three minutes remaining, Southern Connecticut closed out the period with a 7-0 run to bring the score to within one, 16-15.
Adelphi opened the quarter with a good layup from Natalie Fekula, but Southern Connecticut battled back to regain the lead, 20-18, after a deep three from McLaughlin at the 6:47 mark. Following two ties, Adelphi would control the rest of the period and lead 31-22 at the half.
At the half, Southern Connecticut was held to shooting only 32.3 percent from the field while Adelphi shot 43.3 percent.
The third period was mostly controlled by Adelphi as we saw the visitors' lead grow to 17, 52-35, with 2:36 left to go. The Owls managed to sneak in within 12, 54-24, after a layup from Smith, but would trail by 15, 57-42, heading into the final period.
Adelphi would remain in control of its offense and extended its lead to 19 four different times until the 1:27 mark where a three-point play from Grossbard brought the score to within single-digits, 77-68. Southern Connecticut wouldn't stop there as a 7-1 run by the hosts cut the Panthers' lead to three, 78-75 with 44 seconds left to play. However, Adelphi would push its lead back up to seven, 82-75, before securing the 82-78 road victory.
The Owls finished the day shooting 40 percent (28-of-70) from the floor, 25 percent (5-of-20) from behind the arc and 73.9 percent from the line, while Adelphi shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) from the field, 50.0 percent (8-of-16) from three-point range and 64.5 percent from the charity stripe.
Sierra Clark led the Panthers' offense with a team-high 27 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and a steal over 26 minutes of play.
