Women's Basketball Prepares for Two Crucial NE-10 Games This Week at AIC and Saint Rose

The Owls face American International and Saint Rose this week in NE-10 play.

OWLS PREPARE FOR TWO GAMES
Despite coming off a loss to Adelphi, the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team looks to bounce back as the Owls prepare for two crucial Northeast-10 Conference showdowns at American International on Wednesday and the College of Saint Rose on Saturday.
 
SCSU VS. SAINT ROSE GAME TELEVISED
On Saturday Feb. 13, the Southern Connecticut and Saint Rose women's and men's basketball game will be aired live on the American Sports Network. The women's game will begin at 2 p.m. in Albany, N.Y.

SCOUTING AMERICAN INT'L
• The Yellow Jackets are currently on a four game winning streak and hold a record of 19-4 and 12-4.
• Briana Bishop leads the Yellow Jackets in scoring averaging 14.1 points per game.
• American International is first in the league in seven categories including free throw percentage (76.9%), offensive rebounds per game (15.6), total rebounds per game (41.2), rebound margin (8.6), turnovers per game (14.1), steals per game (9.6) and points per game allowed (52.7).
• At home, the Yellow Jackets are 7-3 while averaging 67.2 points per game.
• Dana Watts ranks fourth in the league in field goal percentage with 50.3 percent.

ALL-TIME VS. AMERICAN INT'L
American International leads the Owls in the all-time series with a record of 23-15.

PREVIOUSLY AGAINST AMERICAN INT'L
Despite being down one-point at halftime, the women's basketball team could not stop American International's second half run as the Owls fell 67-51. Senior Jackie Beathea led the Owls this evening with her third double-double of the year with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

SCOUTING SAINT ROSE
• The Golden Knights are currently on a four game losing streak and hold a record of 14-9 and 8-8.
• Staci Barrett leads the team averaging 11.8 points per game while shooting 43.6 percent from the floor.
• At home, Saint Rose holds a record of 8-5 and averages 63.5 points per game as the host.
• Karissa Birthwright leads the league with a 58.7 percent field goal percentage.
• Taylor Nazon ranks fourth in the league with a 41.0 three-point percentage.

ALL-TIME VS. SAINT ROSE
Southern Connecticut leads the Golden Knights in the all-time series with a record of 19-10.

PREVIOUSLY VS. SAINT ROSE
Sophomore Paige Decker scored a career-high 19 points as the women's basketball team picked up its first Northeast-10 Conference victory over the College of Saint Rose, 70-60. 

WEEK 12 RECAP
Southern Connecticut only had one game last week as the Owls fell to Adelphi, 82-78. Southern Connecticut trailed by as many as 19 in the final period with 8:55 remaining and made a late run to cut the lead to three, 78-75, but ran out of time

LYNCH CLOSING IN ON 100 WINS
Following the loss to Adelphi, head coach Kate Lynch remains five games away from recording her 100th win as a head coach.

BEATHEA TIES SEASON-HIGH AND RECORDS DOUBLE-DOUBLE
For the 14th time this season, senior Jackie Beathea recorded a double-double, 23 points and 12 rebounds, against Adelphi. She also recorded a new season-high in points (23) and in assists (2).

MCLAUGHLIN SETS NEW SEASON-HIGH
Junior Taylor McLaughlin had an impressive afternoon against Adelphi as she recorded a new season-high 21 points and three assists. She was just one point shy of tying her career-high 22 points.

SMITH HAS A CAREER DAY VS. ADELPHI
Freshman Allie Smith had a career-game as she recorded a career-high in points, rebounds and in assists. She posted eight points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Nicole Grossbard ranks:
• 10th in total assists with 126.
• 15th in assists per game with 5.5.
 
NORTHEAST-10 LEADERS (as of 2/9)
Jackie Beathea not only leads the team, but leads the conference in rebounds averaging 13.0 a contest.
Jackie Beathea is ninth in the league averaging 1.0 blocks per contest.
Maria Weselyj leads the conference with a three-point shooting percentage of 45.9 percent.
Nicole Grossbard is third in the league in assists averaging 5.5 a game as well as seventh in the league in steals averaging 1.9 a game.
Taylor McLaughlin is 10th in the league shooting 79.0 percent from the free throw line.

BEATHEA SETS NEW SCSU SINGLE GAME-HIGH
In the win against Post University, Jackie Beathea set a new SCSU single game-high in rebounds with 22. She posted 10 rebounds in the first half and 12 rebounds in the second half.

BEATHEA RECORDS 1,000 CAREER REBOUND
On January 2, 2016, Jackie Beathea recorded another major achievement as an Owl as she recorded her 1,000th career rebound at Le Moyne. Following this accomplishment, she now leads SCSU in the all-time records books in rebounding.

NEW ARRIVALS
The Owls welcome four newcomers to the squad for the 2015-16 season – Jana Migliaro, Amanda Pfohl, Allie Smith and Erin Ryder.

Southern Connecticut returns 13 players from last year's squad – seniors Liz McKinley, Jacqueline Deens, Jackie Beathea, Nicole Grossbard and Danielle Powell, juniors Taylor McLaughlin and Maria Weselyj, sophomores Chandler Williams, Abby Hurlbert, Paige Decker Chloe Brinton and Kendra Meredith, red-shirt sophomore Murphy Murad.

LYNCH NOTE
Kate Lynch '08 begins her first full season as head coach for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team. Lynch has compiled a 81-65 overall record as a head coach. Lynch remains the all-time leading scorer in Owls' history (1,779 points) and ranks fifth all-time in rebounds (650).

Senior Jacqueline Deens, Nicole Grossbard and Danielle Powell will serve as team tri-captains for the Owls this winter.

LOOKING BACK ON THE SEASON THAT WAS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team closed the regular season with 14 wins and qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Owls had one student-athlete recognized by the league with year-end honors.

BEATHEA NAMED ALL-NE-10
For the third year in a row, Jackie Beathea earned All-Conference honors after an impressive season as she led the Owls in scoring with 384 points and rebounds with 323. She also recorded 16 double-doubles.

AMONG THE NE-10 LEADERS
Amongst the returners, the Owls had three players finish in the top five of Northeast-10 Conference participants in four categories.
Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in rebounds per game, pulling down 11.1 per contest.
Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in offensive rebounds per game, pulling down 5.0 per contest.
Nicole Grossbard finished No. 2 in assists per game, recording 4.9 per contest.

EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had 11 student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2014-15 academic year.

The Owls return to action on Feb. 17th as the team takes on cross-town rival the University of New Haven. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Moore Field House.
