Box Score 2 FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games at Queens (N.Y.) College on Saturday afternoon as part of a four-game series. With the two losses, the Owls fall to 3-4-1 on the season while the Knights improve to 4-5 overall.
GAME ONE: Queens 5 | So. Conn. St. 3 Senior
Jason Harper (Saugus, Mass.) picked up the loss for the Owls as he allowed three runs (all earned) off eight hits over seven innings of pitching. He also recorded eight strikeouts and allowed one walk for the visitors. Sophomore
Griffin Bremer (Higganum, Conn.) relieved Harper in the eighth and allowed two runs off three hits.
Four different student-athletes registered a hit for the Owls as the team went 4-for-28 at the plate and recorded a total of three runs and three RBIs.
Southern Connecticut and Queens College answered quickly in the first as both teams scored a run to tie the game at 1-1. Redshirt freshman
Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) collected the Owls' first RBI of the game as a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly allowed
Ryan Kaplan (Fishkill, N.Y.) to cross home.
At the end of the second, Queens took a 2-1 lead after Thomas Medina hit an RBI double to right field to allow one run to score, but Southern Connecticut came back in the third to tie the game up at 2-2 after junior
Ethan Joyce (Exeter, N.H.) scored off a
Jake Lieberman (Commack, N.Y.) RBI sacrifice fly.
Southern Connecticut and Queens each scored a run in the fourth tying the game for the third time, 3-3. In this inning, senior
Alex Wichmann (Granby, Conn.) recorded the Owls' third and final RBI of the game as his sacrifice fly to centerfield scored
Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.).
However, Queens would score two more runs in the eight to extend its lead to two, 5-3, before secure the home victory in the ninth.
GAME TWO: QUEENS 7 | SO. CONN. 6 (8 innings - called due to darkness) Senior
Jordan Picini (Attleboro, Mass.) collected his first loss of the season as he relieved sophomore Chris Ramos (Shelton, Conn.) in the bottom of the fifth. Ramos pitched the first four innings for the visitors and allowed five runs (three earned) of six hits and recorded three strikeouts and three walks. Picini finished game two with two runs, three hits, two walks and six strikeouts.
Lieberman led the Owls in game two with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate as well as contributed one of the Owls' six RBIs. Wichman and Joyce tallied a team-high two RBI each in the visitors' loss.
Bats went crazy in the first as the Owls managed to tally six runs off four hits to open game two with the quick 6-0 lead. Queens responded back with two runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth and seventh to tie the game at 6-6 entering the eighth and final inning.
In the top of the eight, Southern Connecticut was unable to get a rally going before Queens took home the 7-6 win after scoring a run in the eighth off an RBI bunt.
Up NextSouthern Connecticut concludes its four-game series with Queens (N.Y.) tomorrow March 13 with a doubleheader beginning at noon at the SCSU Ballpark.
