Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team came up short 7-3 against Saint Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference clash on Wednesday morning as part of the Owls' spring trip to Florida. Following the loss, the Owls fall to 4-6-1 while the Spartans improve to 10-3 on the season.
Sophomore
Griffin Bremer (Higganum, Conn.) started on the mound for the Owls and pitched a total of six innings. Senior
Jordan Picini (Attleboro, Mass.) earned his second loss of the season as he picked up the loss on the mound this afternoon against the Spartans. Senior
Austin Brochu (Winsted, Conn.) and freshman
Shawn Urbano (Stamford, Conn.) also saw time on the mound for the Owls.
Four players recorded one of the Owls' four hits while freshman
Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) and junior
Kyle Hart (North Branford, Conn.) each recorded an RBI single for the offense.
Over the first two innings of play, Saint Thomas Aquinas took a 2-0 lead over the Owls until the top of the third as
Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) and
Ryan Kaplan (Fishkill, N.Y.) both came in to score, tying the game at 2-2. Lamberti and Kaplan started the inning with back-to-back walks before scoring off pass balls and wild pitches from Saint Thomas Aquinas's Frankie Moscatiello.
However, in the bottom of the third, the Spartans regained the lead, 3-2, off an RBI grounder from Rich Cesca, Jr.
The score remained 3-2 over the next two innings until Southern Connecticut collected a run in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3 as
Greg Zullo (Branford, Conn.) crossed home after Hart recorded the Owls' final run of the game.
Saint Thomas Aquinas drew two runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth to secure the 7-3 win.
Southern Connecticut returns to action tomorrow with a non-conference rematch against Saint Thomas Aquinas beginning at 11 a.m.
